Log Chains
« on: Feb 26, 2013, 03:07 PM »
Got this tip from a local ice fishing forum, and it really works good. Instead of "banking in" my eskimo portable shack I got three 6' sections of log chain and I lay them on the skirt around the shack. That way the skirt doesn't freeze down, and when I pack up at the end of the day I don't have all the ice frozen on the skirt getting into the tub of the shack. It weighs a lot so I don't have it in the tub if I have to pull it out, but if I can drive my truck to where I set up it works great.

I lay my spud on one side and my hand auger (w/blade cover) on the other side of my Kenai. Works for me.

I was carrying a couple of dog tie out chains but never needed them so leave them home now to cut weight.

My skirt froze in once, took an hour to free it. Next day picked up a bag of sand from hardware store and put together sand socks.
- large ziplock freezer bags
- measured out 5 lbs of sand, put in freezer bags
- rolled bags close, sealed, wrapped tape around each end
- placed inside old wool sock, tied knot, cut off excess leaving about 1.5 inches
- put inside second wool sock, knotted end of first one in first
- knotted second sock, cut off excess leaving 1.5 inches
Have 6 of them made, all fit inside milk crate that goes on the bike, no problem since.

  • Ice fishing a sport, or just reason to buy stuff?

I just hate it when the wind blows up my skirt too.

The log chains came in handy on Bitter this weekend, we loaned them to some guys who were trying to pull a permie and got themselves stuck in the path to where no one else could get past. Another guy who was trying to exit the lake was able to pull them out using our chains.
