I've had a vex for about 13 years.  No issues!  Still use the original battery.  I do take good care of all my 'stuff" though.  I would have to buy anther vex.  The Marcums look real nice though.  My vex has the bottom zoom, well worth the extra  $.

I own a Marcum Lx5 and a Vex FL 18. I think I like my vex over my marcum . Biggest is battery life my vex i can go two full days of fishing without charging. Where my LX5 I haft to bring a extra battery because it useally dies in about 5-6 hours of fishing. The bottom lock feature on vex I like over marcum's zoom mode. I don't like how much interference marcums cause.

Hummingbird ice 35 for me as well! I have a friend who has a vexlar fl-8 I believe and my screen is much bigger than his. I run it side by side with his and have absolutely no interference. Ice 35 goes to depth of 200' where the fl-8 limits out at 120'. I believe you can fine tune the gain to your liking a lot better with the ice 35 as well. It has the zoom feature so you can zoom to any part of the water column you want. I just used mine for 2 straight days for a total of about 12 hrs and I still have just over half battery. As for the more pricey vexlars and/or any marcum, I cannot compare as I have not used them. Hope this helped.

5-6 hours?? your battery was not maintained very well then. My lx lasted as long as I ever needed and never ded on me. Bottom lock zoom is ok but the moveable zoom on the showdown is super nice. 1/2 target separation is a big advantage over the competition. No moving parts long run time on battery, heated screen ,softpack, upgradeable... the showdown is a sweet unit. Had a lx5 loved it have a lx7 now awesome unit but for an extra unit i will be getting a showdown 5.6 for my wife or whoeve comes along.

I agree with Hamms, my LX=5 is one of the first years they made them and a good battery will last 2 days easy, same with my LX-7.... I have owned every Vex but the 22 and never regretted switching to the LX series, will be adding a 2nd LX-7 for the wife next year...Bottom lock is good if you use it on a boat but realy does nothing on the ice, I need to be able to use the zoom in just more than the bottom few feet when fishing suspended schools of fish and Marcums power and seperation shine for bottom huggers and in shallow weedy situations.... Plus I prefer the finer crisp lines of the LX over the blended thick lines of the Vex...

I have a marcum lx3 and love the moveable zoom...works well when fishing suspended crappie in deep water...whoever said thier marcum battery only lasts 5-6hours definiatly didnt take care of thier battery...i forgot to charge mine once this season and got 2 days totaling 17 hours of fishing out of it and never had it die on me out on the lake...ill never switch to a different brand of electronics.

Then I think you need to call Marcum somethings wrong if you only get a few hours out of a good battery, wife got  8 hours out of her  4 year old almost shot battery Saturday...

Try a showdown and see for yourself. If you want a color unit try the vx1 pro, lx3,lx5 or the 6,7 and then try a vex of your buddys...you will see which one you like best.  For a mechanical flasher I would choose the lx5.

I wouldnt buy vx-1 just becouse it only has bottom zoom and not moveable zoom...i was being cheap and picked up the lx-3 now I wish I got the 5 for 100 bucks more...my 3 is awesome but wish I had a 8 degree transducer for deep water.u get what u pay for...but any flasher is definiatly better than no flasher at all.

Marcum or vexilar is a no brainer. Marcum every time. The real question is marcum or h-bird.
