Starting from scratch
« on: Jan 20, 2013, 08:41 AM »
Well had a pretty crappy incident the day before yesterday. I had set up my spearing portable on my lake in the morning, speared for an hour or so before work. I waited until the last second to head in and figured I'd leave my shanty set up and gear in it. Well it sat here on this sand bar with my spear, spud, chair, and decoy with rod for the entire day and into the next morning. Fast forward, next morning a friend and I headed out fishing and so I grabbed my chair, rod with decoy (pike jigging rod too) and spud and went out fishing. The wind was slowly picking up while fishing, didn't think much about it. Came back from the lake and then had to run to Ann Arbor and wrap up a few jobs. By now the wind was moving pretty good and changed from west to south. The canal runs north and south. Upon pulling back into the driveway, this thought came over me about the shanty and so I ran around the garage and was horrified when I didn't see my shanty. I'll let the photo explain the rest of the story :'(

Luckily my neighbor purchased the same spear at the same time with me and he said I could borrow it the rest of the year. He only uses it for roughfish off a boat in the summer. In the meantime, I am going to build my own. But I'm still out of a shanty. BTW it's 23 fow where she sunk. Gonna check the ice later today and hopefully I can get the hard sided shack out and get back into some fish.

Talk about a sad story. I figured this was going to be about thieves when you said you had left everything in it. I can remember a time when we left stuff in our houses but those days are long gone.

Bummer. I would try marking site for magnet work later.

Well I almost went and bought a hub style shanty for strictly spearing out of but looked around for a while and didn't want to pay the 189 for the 3 man frabill hub. The biggest reason is I want to eventually want to purchase a flip over style for mainly icefishing from and don't want to fish from a hub style. However, I did find a g3 Rockhouse hub style pop up hunting blind originally 149 marked 109 and paid 93.00 out the door from Dunhams. It will work perfectly for spearing and is dark and black on the inside. I can just about stand up in it and its dimensions are 45.5l x 45.5w. Great for one man spearing sits but can make 2 people work. As far as fishing, two people comfortably. I modified the bottom of the sides with 12" wide canvas flaps that I zip stripped every 3 inches along the base. This tightens up the wall to ice area making it more wind tight and gives me an area to pack snow around the sides.I also added 10" long dowel sticks with rope tied off through the center and these can be tied off to the center of the hubs and with a hole in the ice, I can drop the dowel in and have anchors quick and easy. I'm gonna try it out in the a.m. Hopefully get some pics up with results!

Sounds like a good choice. Can't wait to see some pictures of your set up and catch.

Heres the rig. Tested it out in 15 to 20 mph winds this morning and with just the one anchor, it did great! I want to pick up some Gorilla tape and tape off the flaps for the windows. With the wind they let too much air in, and light. Saw one bullhead and no pike. Otherwise I was happy with my new investment.

Thanks man.  I've been doing good lately seeing pike just not much over the 24 inch minimum. Got lucky with 2 24's and figured I'd stop while I was ahead. Lol. It's amazing how many other fish the decoys bring in. Cleaned up on 8 to 9.5 gills yesterday morning. A few crappie too. i'll get that check sent to you a.s.a.p
