Thin ice
« on: Jan 24, 2013, 04:37 PM »
I went out on a small private pond in Monroe County that is about 1000' in elevation to check the ice.  Started off with 4" by the shore and was down to 2 1/2" when I was toward the middle.  I couldn't believe that was all the ice there was.  Will head farther north tomorrow.

When i am not sure of the thickness of the ice i walk with a spud bar and give the ice a good hit as i go.  I feel safe on 4 inches.  With this cold air I would think most of the lakes should be good.

My same technique, I couldn't believe when the bar went through on the first hit and I measured only 2 1/2 inches.  This is a lake that I usually fish early in the season and I couldn't believe how thin it got toward the middle.  4 inches=GREAT........2 1/2 inches and I'm backing off.

Nope, it is fed by a small stream.

The same pond was up to 3 1/2" tonight and I found 5 - 6" in ponds up in Bushkill (Pike County) area.
