jig pole problem
« on: Jan 25, 2013, 11:15 AM »
so i have 1lb braid on my poles and now they arent working properly. its like the drag wont engage so i can pull the line stright off the reel with no resistence.  so when a fish is fighting and im reeling we are canceling each other out and im not getting the fish in. should i increase the lb test of line or is there something wrong with reel

i think i know what is happening. did you put a small ammount of mono as a backer on the reel? then tie braid to mono and fill your spool as needed.what is happening is the braid is spinning on the spool by itself. mono "sticks" to the spool when putting on fresh line. hope this helps

with any braid line you need mono on as backing the braid will just slip on the spool where the mono will grip so if you have a empty real spool the braid off the one rod onto that reel then put your backing on and then spool the line back on the reel plus with the mono backing you don't have to use as much of the braid to fill the spool

Need to have about 3' of backer line as a starter on spool.

Or put a small piece of tape on the first wrap to hold the braid to the spool.

You could just let the line off, then where it is tied to the spool put some masking tape around the line and spool, make a few more wraps around with the line and tape around it again then it won't spin. I do that on my musky reels also with braided super line.

I do a slip knot on the spool then take a little piece of electrical tape and tape part of the slip knot with it. It holds the loop in place and then gives the line something to bite into also. All I use anymore is braid (PowerPro) and never had a problem since using the tape. Hope this helps.
