Congrats on the salmon. Must of been a ride on the ultralight gear. I remember fishing Horn Pond once in open water for salmon in December. It was windy as hell. Couldn't cast any further than 4O feet with a kastmaster. Tough place to fish in my opinion.
it is indeed a tough place. i live relatively nearby but hardly go anymore. only if i want to target salmon. many easier places to fish for bass and trout.
goldpin horn pond is loaded with rainbows some days i kill them there other days not so much Its close to home and i have had 45 years of fishing there including 10 years of opening day You wanted to see a circus that was it people camped out all night fires going Every body waiting for the siren to off at sunriseThen it was like that scene in the movie 300 when all the arrows blackened the sky Only instead of arrows they were als goldfish red and white dardevles and mepps spinners being shot from shakespeare wonder rods with mitchell 300s from anglers lined up shoulder to shoulder and they would all hit the water at the same time > Now that was indeed tough fishing but what fun it was.
haha i can imagine the madness. i used to go to quabbin every year for opening day. first year i went i couldn't believe literally 100 cars would line up at 4am to get in! i was at horn 2 years ago when I just happened to show up about an hour after the spring stocking. I certainly had never seen anything like that before. I almost couldn't believe all the fish bundled up just a few feet from shore. I could reach out and grab them. At first I didn't even believe they were trout. I thought there was some kind of crazy frog spawn. Easily the fastest limit I ever had for trout. I used to take my hobie kayak there for rainbows too. Limited success. casting metal and trolling yozuri crystal minnows mostly. i actually tried to go to the cross over mid december to see if i could pull up some fat goldies for pike. i was tossing oatmeal in for chum but couldn't get anything. i have caught some fat goldies there before on trout worms while going for trout.
Goldpin The best lures for rainbows is a super duper trolled als goldfish mepps spinner and a bead head wooly bugger again trolled from the flagplole to the boat ramp at sturges st back and forth
