Snowmobile track adjustment
« on: Jan 04, 2013, 07:19 AM »
Need a little help on how to tighten the track on a 500 ski doo touring sled. Mostly need to know, if the track rides to one side after adjusting, which side to tighten in order to get the track to track in the center? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You tighten the OPPOSITE side of which direction you want the track to go, so if you want the track to move to the right, you tighten the left hand side.

On a Ski-Doo, the proper overall tension for the track is to have about 1" to 1 1/4" of gap between the slide rail and track, when you pull down on the track in the middle with about 15lb of force. I usually just hook a fish scale on one of the track clips and pull down. Get the track lined up nice and straight, tighten or loosen both sides equally (I count the bolt turns) as needed to get the correct overall tension and then tighten all your jam nuts and axle bolts and Enjoy!

Every sled is different, if you have the manual, it should tell you right in there, where you should hang the weight (and how much weight) off the suspended track to know that you've got it adjusted right.

I used to own a similar sled, I don't remember the exact specs offhand, but those numbers will get you pretty close.

Remember when you want to tighten the track you have to loosen the back axle bolts that hold the rear bogie wheels before you make the adjustment. then you tighten the side you want to move toward the rails. The 1-1 1/4 will be right for the tension. then you tighten everything up and run it to check your side to side adjustment was correct. if not start from the begining and continue until you get it centered.
