reading a marcum lx-3
« on: Feb 18, 2013, 06:17 PM »
I have a couple of questions about using my new marcum lx3. First , when i am fishing in 30 feet of water i set my depth dial to the 40 ft position. I can see my jig going down but close to the bottom i lose it. So i turn the gain up and then there is a lot of clutter that shows up at the bottom. What am i doing wrong? Also, when i go to zoom, i hold the down button in until the two little bars reach the bottom (what the unit is reading as bottom) now, will it be reading the bottom 5ft on the left side ? Another question, when some one is using another unit next to me i push the IR button but there is still large flashes going up the right side of my screen . Any help would be appreciated . ty

I think I have my LX3 just about figured out.  You have the correct setting for your depth, are you fishing in weeds, that may cause you to loose sight of your jig when you get close to the bottom?  The gain should just be turned high enough to see your jig, any higher and you will get a lot of interference.  I have never had my higher than 2.  On zoom, your are correct, when the 2 lines hit the bottom of your view, the picture on the left will be  the bottom 5 feet, the whole water column will still appear on the right.  As for the IR, I don't know how close another unit needs to be to cause interference?  I don't recall seeing the flashes on the left when in the zoom mode?  Sorry I'm not much help here.  There is a good tutorial in Youtube, just search Marcum.

If you hit the zoom button once, then arrow the "window" down to the bottom 5 feet, then it will be the bottom 5 feet that you see over on the left side of the display.  If you hit zoom a second time, it will be a 10-foot zoom window instead.  I used an LX-3 (not TC) this season (I'm speaking past tense because ice has all but gone where I live) and in deeper water, I really got a lot of use out of the 10-foot zoom window, especially on suspended crappie.

When looking for your jig, gain is everything.  Like coolhand said you may be in the weeds if you are getting a lot of clutter, but just turn up your gain enough to make your jig or bait a single solid yellow line.  The zoom feature zooms in the bottom 5 feet if you push the ZM button once and 10 feet if you push it a second time, when you are on the 20' and 40' depth selections.  If you are on 80' it zooms in to the bottom 10' and 20', and if you are on the 160' depth selection it zooms into the bottom 20' and 40' depending on if you push the zoom button once or twice.  As far as your IR rejection goes it's a 10 step interference system.  So when you are fishing next to another flasher push the IR button and wait a few seconds.  If that doesn't work push it again and wait a bit more.  Keep doing this until you are satisfied and it clears up.  Sometimes you won't be able to clear up all the clutter but usually most of it.  Hope this helps its an awesome unit!!
