« on: Jan 07, 2013, 01:57 PM »
I'm looking to meet up with or join in on some fellow smelters. If you're heading out and would like some company feel free to send me a PM and I'll meet up with you if its not too far. Thanks for reading this.

I wouldn't be in too big of a hurry, no body has seen a smelt on great bay yet. As far as I know, although the shack has only been out since yesterday.

Haha, just saw that he said freshwater.  I always associate smelt with the salt.

I'm not too picky, I'd really like to get some smelt in the frying pan and some for in the freezer. I'ts been a long time since I've gone smelt fishing and would love to do it again. Every year I try to get out and something or someone always seems to get in my way. But not this year, I am hoping to get out as much as I can.

It's been a long time since I have been smelt fishing, but from what I've been told by others and read, they are cannibalistic, small hooks tipped with smelt, Hali jigs with light line. fished at night about 10-15 feet of water in certain lakes or rivers (I heard from George Taylor NH F&G rotates the smelt lakes every so often to help reduce the impact on them). and you're allowed 2 liquid quarts within a day. If you read the new fresh or salt water fishing guide it has more info.
