ope magIII
« on: Feb 09, 2012, 11:22 AM »
I know a guy that has a mag III OPE auger. it has a tecumpsa engine 49cc and he says he thinks its ten years old. He wants a $100 bucks for it. I read a little on them and saw that it was made by strikemaster or became strikemaster and is the strikemaster 2000 equivelant.

is this a good buy? he has had it running this year and says it cuts nice.

I've been augerin' with the same one for 2 decades. Though I think mines a 33cc engine. I'm happy with it so far.  ;)2  His price sounds reasonable to me, eh.

I've been using mine for as long as UP as well. Yes, it uses the MAG2000 blades. 49cc

I was given a spare flighting, complete auger shaft and I made a paper template to fit on the bottom, cut it ti 10" diameter, then laid that on some 16gua metal and traced it, cut it, carriage bolted it to the bottom of the auger, them attached a 10.25" blade. It works SWEET! Now I have 2 sizes for one powerhead. 8.25 and 10.25"
 @)

8" for early and late ice, 10 for when your holes keep shrinking in frigid weather.

Yes $100 is a very good price. If you have any probs with it, just give a 'holler'.

If its in decent running condition $100 is more than fair. Should be able to get at minimum another decade of use out of it.

It started  and would quit. So i offered him 40 bucks figuring I would have to get a carb rebuild kit. He said ok. Brought it home. Cleaned the carb. It started right up. Then went up and drilled20 holes in my pond. Ran great.
Now. It doesn't turn real fast. Is this a low rpm auger?

Ya, it's not really a high rpm auger. Hope you weren't planning on entering into the auger Olympics with it.  ;D  Heck for the price you paid you can't even buy a quality hand auger.

The RPM's of the motor are normal but the reason it spins slower is the double gear reduction that most Jiffy's do not have, even some of their 2HP ones. Their 2HP ones sometimes have problems getting through the bottom of the hole because of this. My MAG3 will knock you off your feet if you aren't ready and wearing cleats on ice and thin crust when it gets to the bottom.

You got one sweet deal! Mine was used, guy wanted $125 back I don't remember when (CRS disease), 80's or early 90's? I talked him down to $90 and he was from my same town only a couple miles away. Mine also had carb probs which turned out an easy fix. Since then I have done nothing but keep fresh gas in it. Haven't ever even changed the plug! The nut on the switch came loose once and that was fixed with a pair of pliers... I don't really call that a repair.

Take good care of it and it may outlast you!  @)

I want to do a tune up on it. It has a cj6y plug but all I could find was a cj6  what is a cross to a NGk? Also do you know  the part  number for a carb rebuild kit.

Way at the bottom on this page there's a link to a pic which shows the letter/numbering system for Champion plugs
http://www.championsparkplugs.com/sparkplug411.asp

Mine is a CJ6Y and is a 3/4" hex similar to a lawn mower/snowblower size plug. Here's a cross reference site to punch in the numbers and it tells you what the other brands are equivalent to.
http://www.sparkplug-crossreference.com/

$1.99 for an NGK and $4.00 for Champs?!?!  ???  Wonder why the NGK is so cheap? I'll look next to find carb kits. I should get one for the future for mine too...  @)

Going to bring this thread back. I got this beast out and cleaned her up. The recoil is acting up. Can I get this somewhere ? Is there a place to look for a part number or manufacturer?
It works but it makes a God aweful noise when it starts up.
