Old Polaris one man shanty
« on: Dec 31, 2012, 08:13 AM »
This summer at a Salvation Army store I bought a new Polaris one man shanty that came with a torn up box.  I realize this is a very cheaply made thing but the price of $7.50 was to much to pass up.  The thing is very light but I thought it might work at times instead of using my Clam Guide fish trap when fishing alone.   I have it together but am unable to figure out how to use it in the windbreak position.  I searched both the shanty name and the manufacturer on the web but have found nothing.

Any one ever have one of these or remember anything about them ?

That's it exactly.  I'm assuming I have it together correctly with what was in the box.  I used binder clips to hold the tent around the tub lip as the elastic kept moving.  This has 3 separate bows that tilt forward but they have no expandable poles.  Seems to me like there should be something that holds the front hoop upright when you just want to use it as a windbreak.

Any tips or other pictures you can give me would me appreciated.  How stiff/brittle is the tarp material in below freezing weather.  Thanks for your reply.

One last question hopefully.  I see no place to attach the tow rope that was provided.  I had planed on just drilling a hole a using an eye bolt to tie to. Is that what you did.

Any one else know anything about this shanty?  Threadforstring told me his doesn't set up as a windbreak either the way it is.  The box shows it set up that way and it says as part of the advertising it can be done.  I did notice a couple of sets of holes near the front of the tub where perhaps another couple pieces belong.  May just try and cut a couple of wood 2 by 2's in half and drill them out so they fit around the upright poles to hold it up.  Maybe use a pair of bolts with wing nuts to attach and remove when needed.

Used mine today for first time in 5 years I also noticed it dissent stay all way down on ground when totally flipped over it was like I had to spread eagle lol and put my feet on the poles. It actually keep feet off ice. Yours do that? I'll get those pictures for you tonight warming up now

I've only set it up in the basement but yes the front is an inch or two off the ground when flipped over.  I did find out that the holes along the sides are for the tow rope to be threaded through and then knotted at the open end of the shanty.  I still think it will work ok when I'm fishing a trout /panfish lake here alone.

I'm not sure if there is much room in front for a heater when flipped down.  Did you try it with one today, and it appears the only other place it would go is under the lawn chair and I don't want to do that.
