PCSing to Elmendorf
« on: Nov 09, 2012, 05:04 PM »
How's the ice fishing in the area? A lot of driving involved?  I have so many questions, I don't know where to start. I'm reading up but still thought I'd toss a post up.  I won't be there until next September, so lots of time to get an idea of how it's going to be.

You don't need to drive far. There are 11 lakes on JBER that are stocked by ADF&G and another 10 stocked lakes in the Anchorage vicinity.
Why do I always leave shrimp in my pocket from last week?

Sweeet!  ;D

I can't wait to get up there.  Mostly a walleye and perch guy here in Montana, looks like I'll have to switch it up out there, I guess that means more tackle  :)

Thanks guys.  I can hardly sleep at night and it's 10 months away, hot dang.  I've been reading a lot and I joined AOD and have been soaking up a lot of information.  I'll have a good friend who works at Denali and another who will be stationed up at Eielson, I have more than enough reasons to get out and fish  ;D ;D

Just arrived myself 2 weeks ago from Wisconsin.  Wondering if they allow civilian personnel on post in order to fish some of those lakes.  I do work for the federal government but just not with the armed forces.  Live about 2 miles south of the base.  Took a drive to Palmer and Wasilla today trying to get the lay of the land and did see a couple small lakes along the way but, no one fishing.

I believe you can get a pass @ the gate.
I'm sure someone local can confirm the process.   ;)

Thanks jiggenfrogs.  I certainly dont doubt that a bit.  The base is close and I know where it is.  Just trying to get my feet wet is all.

I'll be avoiding those as much as I can, probably  hit those for a quick trip every now and then, but there's enough of that crap in Montana, not a fan.

Yeah there are big laker trout three hours north than you have big lake which has almost everything in it. The lakes on base are fun when you just need a quick fix. I'll try and post some pictures on rainbows we caught on base if I can figure it out. Decent size.
Lets go catch some fish!
