BEST WAY TO FIND FISH ON A NEW LAKE
« on: Jan 09, 2005, 04:03 PM »
I have tried a lot of things to fig. out where fish are on a new lake but the best way I have found to date follows. Take a big pot full of chili,a fishcooker, and lots of throw away cups and spoons.Go to the lake you want to fish and find the spot where the most people are. Haul the stuff out into the middle of the crowd and start cooking. In no time you will know all you want about the lake and fish and a lot about the people fishing it. One last note: be sure to take a trash bag to haul off the junk. If you can't find out where to fish with this tip then there are no fish in the lake.
Take a kid fishing, they make great pack mules.
Put the big ones back for another day eat the small ones.

Fresh chili on the hard water sounds great. While the locals are sampling your grocieries , have a quality map of the lake so they can mark some hot spots for you to fish... Just a thought.

No offense to any of the many ethnic groups that make this country great, but I had an uncle who referred to dynamite or even an M-80 as a Polish Dry Fly.  :)  God rest his sole, he was a funny guy to have around.

im still trying the lake i grew up on.  still havent quite figured it out.  its a deep, clearwater lake.  ive found its made a very good fisherman out of me though.  i have a lake for pike, catchem anytime i want.  i have a shellcracker lake, a perch lake, a walleye lake, a bluegill/pumpkinseed lake.  landed 3 walleye on my lake finally.  i always approach the old timers.  the ones sitting there with nothing more than a cheap pole, and his hook, and bobbers.  no fancy electronics.  the drinkers always want to tell you how they caught 25 walleyes in 1 hour.  lol, i would like to run into you when youre cooking your chili.  id tell you what to do.  im normally very antisocial when i fish.  i hide the fish i catch from others lol

On a serious note I have to agree with the scientific angler approach as well.

Planning the trip:
Know what you are after and their pattern/s for the time of year.
Have maps of the location and know access points.
**(The NY State DEC has many water bodies on their site for NY State. Other states may do the same).

While on the trip:
Use the map, mark it up with notes.
Know the depth at each spot.
Use any electronics you have to mark depth, structure and fish.
Have a GPS? Use it to mark the hot spots.
Move around, don't screw around.
(I can't tell you how many people I see dilly dally and dawdle when getting set up and between spots).
**Sometimes the best fisherman is simply the one who has his line in the water the most.
Throw everything you have in the tackle box at them until you find the hot combination.
If there are some locals there, don't be afraid to share equally with them.

After the trip:
Prepare for the next time by keeping a notebook / journal.

We were on a fishing trip a couple weeks ago and an older guy that new the area aproaches us ends up he had maps for all the lakes in the area being that he did a lot of trapping also. some of the info helped out being we had no idea of any depths throuth the lake.

It's always great when you find someone willing to share and pass on some of their knowledge.
