Does it take a different blade than the blue one? I noticed its a tiny bit cheaper than the standard nils. The blade on the orange one is black instead of red.

I got mine a couple weeks ago, I can take some pictures for ya if you want. It's my first Nils, so I can't say if anythings different than the trusty light blue/red.

They're only made in 4.5" and 6" models, rather than 4.5",6",7",8" models like the blue/red. Could be why they're cheaper.

It has much less flighting on it than the standard hand auger. More like a power auger bit. So it would be slightly harder to drill by hand with the orange one vs the blue one.

I haven't gotten my hands on the new Nils Cordless/Convertible Hand auger yet and since they just came out and for that reason
I haven't received any of those blades to sharpen yet either.

So I  called and talked with JP and got the skinny.
The only difference between the standard 42" auger shaft and this one is the flare to keep the auger from going down the hole in case it comes off, a 1/2 stub to attach the drill chuck to and of coarse the orange paint.  Whats  new is the "Slick" cutting head.  The only difference between this head and a regular Nils head is it is a little less aggressive.  Meaning less toque required to rotate the blade.   With that the drill rate is a little less.  The benefit  here is with wet ice whether that be from slush or late ice when a blade can be almost too aggressive.
JP recommends a 2 speed 18 volt drill using the low speed high toque option.   As said earlier they come in 4.5 and 6".
The Convertible auger CAN be used with a standard(red) Nils blade if you choose to.

He didnt say anything about the flighting? Just looking at the pictures you can count the rings and see there is nearly 50% less flighting on the orange vs the blue of the same size.

If you have a Blue Nils blade they have a adapter that I haven't seen anyone talk about. The POWER ADAPTER p/n 6430025553238 is the adapter on the Nils power head that attaches to the auger. It has a 1/2-20 thread (which is the same as most HD battery power drills) and the other end goes over the auger. Remove the chuck on the your drill and put on the Nils Power adapter. The auger won't fall down the hole as it can't disconnect. Just don't put your drill in reverse.
If you want to drill holes forever get a 36-40 volt battery drill from Bosch or Dewalt. (Milwaukee's drill, should have a danger warning about the bogus Counter-Torque arm)
Whatever drill you choose make sure you buy the "Hammer Drill" model. It is twice as good for drilling ICE as the plain drill.

Cheers:
