Best Line for Lakers
« on: Feb 04, 2018, 03:28 PM »
Was wondering what you guys are using for jigging big fish.  I tried regular braid this year, it freezes up and is a mess. Regular flouro seems to stiff and twisty in cold weather.  Most ice lines only go to 8 lbs and I'd really like to have at least 10 lb if not 15 lb when fishing for Macs.  Any advice?

I would use 15 lb p-line floro. Stuff is tuff as nails. I’ve used all the other brands and p-line is what I use on ice, trolling, and for salmon in Alaska.
Come on fish!

I run the "Duracast Coated braid" it seems to help with icing up. That paired with 10 feet of 15-20 lb Fluro leader is dynamite.

This is the kind of set up I'm wanting.  I tried this with regular P line braid and it was a mess.  Still use it to dead stick with a jaw jacker but trying to jig with it didn't work well.  I actually ended up calling the company looking for what you mentioned.  It's being sold as Super Cast now, they say it's the same stuff.  Excited to see how it works.  Braided line with no stretch and that limpness has got to be the way to go.
thanks to everyone for the ideas, I appreciate it.

We switch over our braid from our summer setup to straight 20lb P Line through the ice.   To deal with the twisting and memory in the line we sometimes hook the jig on something like the auger and walk it out 75' or so,  it really helps to take the memory out and straighten the line.

  • Ice fishing a sport, or just reason to buy stuff?

I swear by pline, in the 10lb on my baitcaster. As previously noted, stretch your line a few times to take the set out of it. The bait caster and the star drag with a line counter is a real ticket for me.

Using a line conditioner will also help on any line you decide on.
