today we went out to a lake my dad had told me stories from years ago. he and his friends visited often when he was my age and had told stories of a natural fish hatchery not many people new about. So this summer we found it! was a small puddle but managed to catch a small rainbow before we got rained out.
We had decided to revisit when the ice was on and figured it would be one of the first places frozen enough for us to walk on.
Today was the day! November 3rd. we cleared some trail and decided to check the ice thickness, thinking we saw open water out in the middle we were cautious and having seen one of our buddies go for a swim on our early ice fishing adventure last year we did our best to keep things safe.
we augured a dozen holes or so to check ice thicknesses in different parts of the lake and suprisingly there was between 2.5-4.5 inches of ice in all the spots we checked. good enough for us! so down went our lines
Ten Minute fish! we laugh as the first fish of the season was caught, earliest we have ever been out! 2 more fish were caught the biggest being 13inch and the smallest around 8.
here's a picture of a little guy. very dark in colour
