The good old days
« on: Dec 13, 2012, 04:30 PM »
I remember as a kid that Winters around here used to be cold and this white stuff would fall out of the sky and blanket the ground and we would play in it and slide down hills with a special made thing called a sled.
Heck, that's nothing, even the water on lakes and ponds would get rigor mortise and be all hard like cement and you could actually walk on it and slide around.  We would put these special shoes on called "ice skates" and dart all over the place.  There was even a game invented  called "Hockey" that was played on the stiff water.
What fun!  Even neater yet, we used to drill holes in the hard water with a special tool called an "ice auger" and with short little rods we would actually catch fish through the holes we made! Imagine that! Oh what fun we had in the "Old Days".

Yep! I can barely remember those days  :-\ just a mist in my memory anymore  ::) This younger generation ask me what snow hardwater is. I open the frig and say see that white stuff clinging to the freezer..just scrape a bunch of it off and that's what snow looks like

Oh how I fondly remember those days and wish they'd come back and stay.  I also remember having to go and buy a pair of these big funny shoes that we called snowshoes to be able to get in the woods to hunt during the muzzel loader season after Christmas.  Boy those were the days.

Funny you mention that.  I was about 10 yrs old and me and my brother wanted to ice fish this pond in the middle of a farmers field but the snow was over our boots so we tried the old badminton racquets tied to the boots thing like in the old cartoons.   well that went over like a lead balloon.  They got all bent and the strings got busted and when ma and pa found out we got our hides tanned! Oh, and in the summer we would scrape the sides of the freezer into a cup and sprinkle  cool aide powder over the "snow" to flavor it.  called it the "hillbilly snow cone".  lol

I'm 40 and have been hunting since I was 12 and let me tell you back when I started it was always exciting and if you didn't see at least 10 or 12 deer a day it was a bad day.  The Pa Game Commission really screwed the hunters with killing off thousands of Does and stock next to no pheasants compared to back then.  This year they stocked ONE place in 3C back then you could go to at least a dozen and actually see pheasants.

I show my daughter pictures growing up with 2-3 ft snow on the ground, she wishes we still had it.
Never get excited there's a reason for everything,I just don't know what it is??

You had to love their P.R.campaign on how they needed to spend time and money bringing FISHERS back to Pa.They said we needed FISHERS to control the porcupine which was destroying our forests[hmmm....that's also what they said about our over-populated deer herd].There was never really that many porky's-so now that we have FISHERs what ARE they eating?Strangely they now say most FISHERS came here on their own from neighboring states.

fishers are definitely hurting the squirrel population, we have seen several nests torn apart laying on top of the snow with blood and squirrel fur and see fisher tracks coming and going from tree to tree. we see a few squirrels in town, but out in the country and in the woods where I live the population is definitely on the decline. And I know they eat anything else they can catch.

Seems like a lot of the guys that are always complaining about the diminished deer herd and "no deer" are also the ones that get all pissed if they don't shoot at least 2-4 deer a year. The ones that complain about the does being shot usually go doe hunting and harvest does as well. Sometimes the answers are as plain as the nose on ones face they just are too ignorant to realize it.

That's true, last winter was mild-the winter before was long and wicked cold.

You are right. The season before last I was fishing on a local lake that is usually fishable about 3-4 times per 10 years on over 12" of ice.

We need the jet stream to dip down and bring cold canadian air with it. We have been getting all these systems out of west which push warmer air up here.
