Green briaded on tip-ups
« on: Oct 02, 2012, 07:37 PM »
Does anyone use the green braided line on their tip-ups?   How does it compare to the black lines regarding the number of fish you catch?

I have it on a set of 5 traps,  I don't really see a difference in it.

I don't think there would be much of a difference but I could be wrong.  After all if you ask guys about hook color some swear by red while others say silver, gold, or red it doesn't matter what matters is the hook is sharp and the line is good.

The little experience I have had with tip-ups has made me come to the conclusion that it does not matter one bit as long as you run a good fluoro leader. The fish dont care what color the line is, it should be 5-6 feet above their heads, they are looking at that wiggling bait in front of them.

What i do find interesting is that when you buy red color line, it says that fish cant see color red up to certain depth. Meanwhile, they sell red hooks because red hooks attract fish. So line they dont see but metal they do of the same color?  ??? ???

And "bleeding" baits with red lines on them...

I think the red disappearing is a bunch of hogwash... at least disappearing at depths we fish. I could see maybe a mile below the surface it would disappear, but not 10 feet.

Read this article, maybe its me but it contradicts itself. First it says to use red because it disappears in shallow then it says to attach floro in the next paragraph.

As a scuba diver I can tell you red is the first color to disappear as the red light does not penetrate.  Red things look black unless they are fluorescent, then the UV light makes them glow red.  I can't see red line becoming invisible just because there is no red light available.  It should appear as black.

I use green line and don't see any difference... however it is a lot easier to see if a fish is running or not with the green compared to black
