Ambejejus Lake?
« on: Mar 04, 2012, 02:27 PM »
My girlfriend has a camp up on Ambejejus lake and was planning on going up and ice fishing this week. I have absolutely zero knowledge of the place so any info would be great. Not looking for hotspots just looking to catch some fish. I don't even know what they fish for up there so anything helps.

You could catch almost anything..but salmon, pickerel and white perch are the common targets.  An occaisional togue or trout are caught as well.  I set a foot or two under the ice for slamon and a foot off the bottom for perch and pickerel.  Oh...and you could catch a cusk or two as well...even during the day.
Whenever someone caught a fish...my Uncle David always shouted..."THROW IT BACK TO IT"S MOTHER!!"  I can hear that echoing across the frozen lake now!

Fish for salmon on top with smelt be careful if you are near the boom house the river runs through the middle and the current makes for thin ice

I caught a nice salmon on opening day this year, also be careful in Spencer Cove....thin ice because of moving water.

It was ridiculously slushy last weekend. I almost cringed when a flag went up, knowing how wet it would be at the hole. The water is down really low which seems to have messed up the fishing a bit this year. Cusk were no where to be found in the usual spots and salmon were short and few. Ice by Spencer is much safer since they stopped pumping, but the lack of pumping also hurts the fishing quality for that whole cove. Sometimes the overal fishing picks up in March as things warm up though. I can't imagine the slush situation has improved so keep that issue in mind.

The Ol' Lady with a light on her Pink Heritage...cusking hard

That was early January...Some salmon too.
Watch the ice, sad to hear its slushy. I heard it was 53 in Rockwood today.....I'm sure it wasn't much better in Millinocket

Just got back, the weather was great, but it was really slushy and wet. 3 days and one flag. No cusk or salmon!
