Tally Lake
« on: Feb 29, 2012, 08:50 PM »
I was wondering if anyone ice fishes Tally. I was thinking of trying it and was hoping to get an ice update. I looked in the lakes ice conditions section, and it wasn't listed. Any input on where to fish would also be greatly appreciated because I've never been there and it would be nice to have an idea where to start.

I have only fished it in summer but it does have a fairly significant input creek on the north end so be careful of the ice on that end of it. I have heard there are pike in it but I have only ever caught kokanee in there, nothing else. Mostly I was just there with the kids to swim and goof around so I haven't exactly fished it very extensively :)

I have fished it all year round...never caught anything through the ice...  the road into the lake is not plowed or maintained and depending on the year you need a snow machine or atv to get in there...   The 2 times I've ice fished it, I've been the only person around...

The lake is full of cuts, 'bows, kokanee, nice pike and monster lake trout.
Have a ball, but good luck with the trip in in the winter
Get bit!

I work with a guy who lives up in star meadows and drives the road regulalry.  I will get a report from him tomorrow and post the road conditions...and yes, MONSTER lake trout.  This lake has a minimum size of 42" for lakers, managed as the only trophy lake trout lake in the state.  You can keep one. AND big pike too.

In the spring, if you want to beat the hell out of your boat, hit it at ice off.  Long line sppons, anything the dives to about 15' and resemble kokanee.  No need to go to Canada!

I have never ice fished it so will be curious about your experience!
If I\'m not fishing, I\'m probably thinking about fishing...And if I\'m thinking about fishing, I\'m probably not getting much else done so, I might as well go fishing...Yeah, I just said that!

What do you mean by beat up your boat?  is it the lake or the road into the lake?  I wouldn't mind getting in on some big pike and lakers.  Might have to come take a ride on your boat to learn how to run and rig up down riggers the right way.

THAT road...the second time I towed my Weldcraft up there...like the third time I ever had it out, I arrived to my entire control panel in the boat having come loose...8 screws had all backed out and the panel was laying in the seat!

Can you say washboard?  In Montana, you always carry a tool bag, right?  Well, I at least had a Phillips screwdriver with me that day!

It's not like that ALL the time, but more often than not.

Yeah...the road into  Tally...at least the last 5-6 miles is not maintained during the winter...you might be able to snowmobile that last bit, but its not plowed from either end until it either melts itself, or we get closer to when they lift the road limits and allow the logging trucks back in there... and there is a lot of snow up there again this year
