I wouldn't go in any less than 4' just because you have to think about lowering the spear in the water and normally pike don't swim in the bottom 6" plus the weed factor

I spear 3-4' all the time. My spear never leaves my hand. Just start tips in over the pike and drive it home. When I used my 3000EX I would use   my 4 1/2" perch on pike up to 29" it worked good in skinny water. The came in on the bottom and the weeds can be to the top of the ice Just a cam to look around the first hole.

So it was 3' without weeds  ??? I never have them swim in on the bottom 6" just because I normally always set up in weeds that are 1'+ but I have had them hug the weeds as you mentioned just never through the weeds on the bottom.

I have them in the weeds all the time, and those are the ones I do see, hard telling how many sneak through undetected.  Almost always it's a big one down there too.

guess Ive had different experiences then, cause I never see many when I'm in real shallow (under 5fow) and Im pretty sure none have ever came right through the weeds but I guess that goes to show ya that you need different tactics for different lakes  ;D
