Ice Fishing Line?
« on: Feb 24, 2012, 08:00 AM »
Anyone recomend a good ice line, I am tired of fishing for walleye and perch, only to have a large pike break my line.  I use fireline in the summer and its great, do they make a ice line? Thanx ??? :)

The microice crystal fireline is great, use it lots along with the cajun red line, very hard to break, low diameter and low visibility.  Everyone has their favorites, some guys like the flurocarbon but I find it brittle and weak while others say braided, old fashioned mono, etc.

Here is more info, you can find it at Walmart, Canadian Tire or any sporting store.

I use the spiderwhire braid in the silver box. White line and its 15lbs test right to the hook with a swivel in the line. Caught a walleye over 10lbs and many other big eyes on it in the winter with no issues.

Cajun red ice. I guided for some shakespeare guys up north and they gave me 2 spools of over 6000 yards on each of their summer line, and I loved it, so I tried the red ice and it is my favorite mono by far. Though I have used the fireline micro ice as well and do like it too.

Cajun red is spooled onto most of my rods and use lighter lb test. Have very very few break offs with it and the only times I do get broken off is if I screw up and don't take my time with big fish by bringing them in too quick. Also use micro ice line and its also a good product

5LB power pro yellow and 6LB nanofil  are my favs.   If you prefer mono 5lb micro ice yellow.
Old fishermen never die, they just smell that way.

I've used Fireline until this year. I tried suffix 832 ice line in lime green and wouldn't go back to fireline.  Nothing against fireline just my preference.

Used to use fire line microice, but this year gave nanofil a try.  Love it.  Same feel as fireline, but it does not pick up as much water as fireline so your guides do not freeze up near as fast.

Nanofil is real pricey though

i've got that stuff on my big set up in 20lb and love it for ripping hooks home into pike and lakers.  i think it's called invisi-braid but i still run a fluoro leader.

I use to run leaders as well but now I just run it straight to the hook. I think its just a confidence issue with people. I haven't notice more catch rate change at all. and yes it is invisi-braid that I am using. Works good in the shack, not the best when outside in the cold though.

Have used 6 and 8 pound fireline for the past 5 seasons.  I love that I don't need a leader and the sensitivity is great!  My brother uses the suffix lime green and he says that it is great too.
I think that it is all what you get used to using.  I have yet to find a good flurocarbon that works well in winter for leaders.  Any suggestions would be great.

Any problems with water visibility with the sufix orange or green?  do you use a 3 foot fluorocarbon leader?  I can't find the clear or invisible type anywhere except online.  The Saskatoon Cabelas will carry it when they open in April but it would be nice to have some now.

pants - i've been using 12lb trilene fluoro as leader on my jigstick and have caught tonnes of big pike this winter.  check your leader after every fish and re-tie as necessary.  not sure i'd trust that light a leader on a tip up as most hook sets tend to be right in the lip when you're jiggin.

i used the orange stuff in 6lb for two winters, quite liked it.  did run a fluoro leader but didn't see any affect on the fishing and really appreciated the visibility and the reasonable price..

Thanks Ranger. I use circle hooks on all my tip-ups, so I never have to worry about deep hook sets.  I'll try the Trilene and see how it runs.
