lakers with crooked backs
« on: Feb 22, 2012, 04:15 PM »
I have seen a lot of 18" to 24" lakers this year on camera with a severe crooked back thing going on. Does anyonknow what excactly it is?They seem fine as far as swimming or feeding. The ones I caught were stiff not flexible like most fish.
There must be a twelve step program for this

I tracked it down to a parasite that attacks the cartilage in the spine, I'll try and find the study they did on it.

I have seen a couple posts here with the lakers and crooked backs? Ive never caught one like that, but I did catch a couple Browns this past fall with a similar problem... I was also told it was due to some sort of parasite?

Nope whirling disease is a bacterial virus, the crook back is from a parasite infestation.

I caught a laker during the derby like that, but it was really fat above the crook.  When I cut open the gut, a bunch of corn-like looking eggs flowed out of it! ???

cantcatchsquat, the issue you're talking about is probably the whirling disease.
