How do you guys rig your tip-ups for smelt so that the line doesn't get tangled from the smelt swiming around?

I crimp my split shots on just loose enough so that I can slide them up and down the leader. I keep my weight within 3 inchs of the hook when I use smelt and it helps to keep them hanging down below the rest of the leader. It also prevents snap off if the sinker hit the edge of the hole during the fight !

i use a loop knot to tie the hook on and the smallest bb weight i can find right up against the knot. i prefer the weight doesnt have those removal wings on them.  then a foot or two up a bigger weight

What AA said. No weight. Send it down SLOOOOOOW. Check bait often. I also give em a flick on the head to stun em when fishing deep. Keep em from tangeling on the way down. They wake right back up in a minute. Chekin bait they seem fine and no knots.
