Jan 22 - loughbrough report
« on: Jan 23, 2012, 12:28 AM »
The lakers were fiesty today put some time in between 12-4:30

My Fish 4 lakers - largest of the day being 3#s and change kept the 2 larger ones for my 2 fish limit
My buddy got 6 - under a # to 2.5ish ended up giving his two away at the end to some guys with less luck

Here were my keepers

The lake is clearly full of these fish but you really have to play with them to get them to strike now that I have a flasher it's made all the difference in the world for laker fishing we fished like 8 holes and i think almost each hole got one these fish are fast and moving sometimes I would jig and there would be a fish on my bait  before you could see it swim to it they would not even think about hitting a still line today had to play with all of them to get strikes and some of the fish caught were suspended

They havent got any fatter it seems still skinny loughbrough lakers as usual but what a fun fight they are

Lots of ice off sydenham some atvs and sleds out on the ice

Nice Job SEOO!, those are the best eatting size.  Question for you, did you notice a lot of baitfish on your sonar.  I was out very early (before dark) yesterday on the west end and besides freezing to death, it was -19 when I hit the ice, I was also picking up tons of light marks on my sonar.  It was similar to interference but I was the only one out there when I started so it wanst that.  I was out the week before and had no problems and the water was really clear so don't think it was from murky water.  Any thoughts?  Anyone else have this problem?

great looking lakers seoo!  Sorry I missed you out there.

@JZ - yeah, I saw the same thing, higher in the water column around dusk.  I thought it may have been the ice on my braided line?  What ever those marks were, they weren't biting  :P

It seems the lakers are hungry, go get 'em before the ice melts this week  ::)

I've been out a few times, there are smelt everywhere in the lake, I looked at my flasher it would say 100fow , then would zoom the bottom and the bottom 5 feet was all fish or small marks, looks like noise, that is smelts. You need to move away from them or on the edge, sometimes moving 20 feet will work, sometimes you have to move 100 feet. I opened up the stomach of one the other night and the smelt was half the size of the trout. They are eating well. I fish the west end as well. Hope it helps.

Great report with some fine looking lakers!!
I agree with the Flasher comments as well. Helps to take it away from them and trigger the chase.

thanks Tim, ya at first I figured it was baitfish or maybe since I was out prior to sunrise it might have been clouds of zooplankton, it seem to clear up a bit once the sun came up but by that time I had already screwed around with my sonar settings so much who knows what I was seeing.  I am thinking it was the plankton because I have marked schools of baitfish before and it didnt quite look like this,  I havent put any real time in in the dark (when plankton are active) so maybe this is a regular occurance.  Lesson learned, don't mess around with the sonar settings until checked a few different spots first!
DL the ice on the line was showing but these marks where there even when I didnt have a line in the water.

Thanks guys I did have what looked like some interference but I was also fishing pretty close to my buddy he has a humminbird and I have a Lowrance my interference wasn't bad but he was getting so frustrated with his that he started fishing blind maybe they were just baitfish thats the first time I have used it in over 35 FOW so i was screwing around with it alot to try to get the settings the way I like them and in the process tried to eliminate as much interference as I could I did have a hard time fishing right off bottom from bottom to about 5 feet up I couldn't pick up my bait it would just show as bottom until I brought it up about 5 feet didn't have that issue in the shallower water
