underwater cameras (recording?)
« on: Nov 19, 2011, 07:56 AM »
I am looking to purchase an underwater viewer and after checking my catalogs the only one I can find that talks about recording is the Marcumvs380.
Price is an issue so I was looking at the Fish TV cams. With all the pics and video on this site I'm sure not everyone is using the same cam so how do you get your pics.I have a samsung video cam,can the underwater viewers be run through your handheld cams to save your footage?
Educate me on this guys :P
Thanks

You can record with all aquavu and Marcum cameras. The aquavu camera you will need to purchase a DVR for (made by aquavu) and for rhe marcum you will have to plug in a camcorder with a video in port

I just got the new Aqua-View mini DVR yesterday and it will work with all cameras with a RCA video out jack, I am using it with the Marcum camera. The old Aqua-View dvr was specific to their cameras. I tried to find a video camera with the analog video in jack but had no luck with it. There might be something out there, I just couldn't find it.

I bought a cheap fish TV three years ago which is made by aqua view I always just video taped the screen with my camera and it works surprisingly well.  Just have to hold the camera back from the monitor a little ways and zoom in other wise you get the lines in the screen. Kind of primitive and people laugh at me but it does the job and didn't break the bank.

I have a video converter that takes SD cards. Run off NY camera battery and just needs a short cord from box back to screen when a care gets full just change it. I think the thing was under $50.

I run an original AquaVu 5". They have an analog RCA video out port. You can view the screen and record the video out signal at the same time provided you have a camcorder that has an RCA video IN port on it. Many of the digital camcorders do not have video IN ports because that signal source is NOT digital and to have a built-in Analog to DV converter means more electronics and more expense in retail price while most folks would never use it. So its fairly rare for the DV camcorder or DSLR to have analog RCA video IN. But nearly all the analog camcorders using Hi8 tapes like Sony Handy Cams had the input port and you can get two full hours of recording from a single tape. The camcorder, tapes and batteries are very compact and take up little space in the shack or tent as extra gear and batteries and tapes are still available. BUT if you record using a camcorder in Hi8, VHS, VHS-C, or SVHS, you will need an analog to DV converter box (Canopus ADVC-100 for example) to play the analog tape through to get it converted to DV (digital video) in your computer's hard drive for editing. So best scenario would be a digital camcorder with an analog Video IN port, whether it uses a Memory Chip for recording or a digital tape.

I also have the original version of AquaVu DVR and the recording is absolutely horrible and would be an embarrassment to post even on Youtube. Its fine for recording just to review back home or show a friend something but its really not good for more than that. I don't know if they have a better version of DVR now or not. Using my Sony HandyCam Hi8 records crystal clear perfect video just as sharp as what is on the screen.

An alternate method for just recording downhole and NOT for viewing topside would be to get one of the GoPro UW video cameras, use the waterproof housing, turn it on and lower it down the hole or put on a rod or stick and point it downhole. You just don't have realtime viewing with that method. But I intend to use one floating on the surface of my spearing hole pointing down to my decoy and record some of my spearing this winter. You can get two hours of battery life which is about a full 16GB memory chip in the GoPro, or run the battery bac pac (battery X2) and a 32GB memory chip and run 4+ straight hours.

A second method if you have an UW camera like AquaVu AND a GoPro, you can attach the GoPro to the under side of the AquaVu camera so anything the AquaVu cam "sees" will be recorded on the GoPro....in High Definition color no less for some impressive footage! And you can position the camera perfectly at your subject.  That's another approach I am going to try. Nice thing about Mem Chip video recording is its erasable to be used over and over again with no deterioration of the chip.  You just need to purchase a FLAT LENS (~$20-30) to install on the underwater GoPro housing in order to get crystal sharp video images. The dome port that comes on the housing is waterproof but causes distortion and blurry focus when used completely submerged. My flat port lens video is good enough for commercial TV which it has been used for.

Search for an Aiptek 1080P HD Camcorder. It's the only hd camera I could find with rca inputs. Quality is good and it's very compact with good battery life.

Scott - I did a search for that cam and it seems as though it is not made anymore, they have a couple used ones on amazon and that's all I can come up with. Is there a model number? How long have you had this? Thanks

I tried out the new dvr from aqua-view yesterday and it really works nice, I wish they would not have put a view screen on it though, it is an added feature that I don't need, and an added cost that I did not need as well.

Hi Scott, I was wondering how my RCA video out cable on my Marcum VS825SD hooks up to this camera,   I am looking at one on Ebay and the lady selling it said there was no RCA inputs in this camera

I use a Aiptek, there is a usb post for audio/video in on my camera. This one appears to be a different model so just verify that it allows video in, and you are good to go

i have the Aiptek as well from recommendations from here last season. I pair it with my Marcum 825c cam. Works good. But I like the new aquavu dvr and the motion detection feature. When Jigging and watching the cam fish come in and out so fast you can't concentrate on catching them and hitting the record button. I'll have to see what others think about it.

Sorry, just want to correct my above post. The Apitek does have a USB port but that is not what is used to plug it into the Marcum Camera.

The apitek has a small (headphone jacks 3.5mm) audio/video "in" on the back of the camera. It also comes with a cord that has a 3.5mm jack on one end and a standard set of RCA on the other end.. Yellow/Red/White.

Tha back of the Marcum camera has an RCA out put that you can plug you "yellow/video" RCA into and record video onto the Apitek

;)     Thanks IceJunky,  it makes total sence now.     There are a few cameras on ebay, (used)   that the guy lost the cable,    can the Camera cable in your picture be bought seperate?     I have a cannon one for video out on my T3i,  maybe that will work

I think this is what you need. Not all Aiptek cameras have the video in.

Curious to see if anyone is using an http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products/capture-convert.en.html to take images from a Marcum to an Iphone or Ipod?
I just bought the latest Marcum 825 camera and would like to connect simply from RCA output to my Iphone the simplest way possible.
any help appreciated!

I am not familiar with the I-pod or I-phone.... do they have a USB INPUT ??  If so they will probably work with the convereter...the other system posted above is ok but it does not record direct from the underwater camera... so you have to record the SCREEN from your video recorder which as I found out...most I get is a reflection of my video recorder and myself trying to capture the screen...and no one wants to see my mug for 10 minutes to be 3 seconds worth of fish action.
