Virgin Lake?
« on: Jan 09, 2012, 10:56 AM »
Is it worth fishing? Dnr says no limits and any means except dynamite or electricity, as the fish are doomed anyway. I live several hrs away. What's the word? Thanks

This is the lake south of Ruthven and from Ames it's a drive. I think DNR already started the draw down. With the low water already in NW IA I wouldn't.

Thanks! We thought that maybe on the way back from Spirit Lake we would check it out sometime.

Might be worth a stop.   I fished Trumbull, Lost Island, and Silver (all Ruthven area) a few weekends ago.  It was pretty much slow all over then but we did swing past Virgin.  At that point, the water level wasn't noticeably lower.  I'm heading back up that way from Ames this weekend.  Hopefully there's still decent ice.  The nice thing about those glacial lakes is if you go through, you're only in about 3 feet of water.

My mother in law lives about 2 miles from the lake. It's nothing I'd really even drive an hour for to tell you the truth. There are some perch in there, but the water is fairly dirty and I think the lake would maybe be 3.5 feet with the lower water levels we've seen. So if you put 6-8inches of ice on it you'll be fishing in in a little over 2 foot of water. You said there is no limit on the lake, but I'd be supprised if you could catch a limit on it.
