Clever idea, but You have to check your state regs, some states do not allow hook setters ! :nono:

although a different setup this would be the same idea as the slammer type of tipups correct?  tension of a rod?

The slammers are designed to be operated with an open bail, no hook setting tension. The automatic fishermen and the jaw jackers do have rod tension for setting., but then with them also, the state regs have to be checked.

I use them and  I like them a lot.  They are cheap and easy to make and take up a lot less room than any other device.  All you need is a rod holder.  The sensitivity is easily adjustable.

The slammers are not designed to have an open bail. They are designed to use with a closed bail ... they set the hook. As sl said check your local reg's.

My mistake, I'm thinking of the units made by HT enterprises.

I made one for myself just about the same, but I have wood base with the string attached to it rather than the reel. 10 minutes to make and costs close to nothing. The thing outfished my son on a lake trout last time out (I beat it though) :). Be ready to adjust how "hooky" is the hook to the eyelet as you change a bait / lure wieght.

I run some "fish traps" on trout.  I have found its best to have a long rod as the regular 24-36" ice rods don't give me enough hookset.  I like a 5' ugly stick spinning rod in I think they are light action, but may be medium light.
