Crappie fishing
« on: Dec 26, 2011, 06:27 PM »
I have pretty limited experience with ice fishing and am interested in giving it a shot.  Would anyone mind throwing my some tips on how to fish for crappie?  I'm not looking for you secret spots or anything, just general depth, lures, etc.  I'll try to find em' on my own if i can get a little knowledge first!

Thanks,

Dusty

Usually a real hit and miss unless you have a flasher as they are usually suspended in the water column.
I have only been a few times myself but usually try very small tear drop jigs with a small piece of salted minnow on it or a real small jigging spoon.
Also very important to have ultra light gear (rod and line) because a lot of the time the bite is very soft.
Lots of the smaller Northland tackle is a good bet to start with (forrage fry and forrage minnow is what I think they are called).
Hope this info helps.

My go to lures come from Northland Tackles Bro bug collection. I've also used berkley gulp minnow with some success. Light gear is great if you have it, but if you don't have ultra lite gear, a spring bobber will do just fine. That's what i used for years before picking up a ultra lite set up.

Thanks, appreciate all the input.  Worst comes to worst, won't be the first day I've spent out without catching anything.  I usually reserve those days for tournaments though.

can never go wrong with a horizontal jig and a small crappie minnow or small fathead. one year the only thing the big crapps would hit is the northland forage minnow or fry.i forgot what it was called exactly but its a minnow head horizontal jig.the perch with gold back was hot.
