Anchoring a ice shelter
« on: Dec 25, 2011, 10:35 AM »
Anyone have some idea's on keeping a shelter down to the ice? I have thought about welding some handles to some lag screws like what can be bought, but I know what happens when a guy tries to hammer ice or put a screw in it. ???

It might help if we knew what type of shelter you are talking about. For a portable, Eskimo makes some very good anchors that start easily by hand.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Ice climbing screws pricey but easy to start and they are bomb proof.

Thanks guy's. It is a popup portable. HT I think. It has the curtain around the bottom. Real light. Right now our ice is clear and solid.

I've got a set similar to HooknHunter's. I got 8 with my Eskimo quickfish. They're tapered so you can put them in by hand very easily.

The portable came with anchors which screw into the ice ny hand and they work fine on windy days.  I don't see why lag screws wouldn't work.

Lag screws will work just fine, after you center drill A BIG HOLE.
On the other hand, the Eskimo Ice Anchors have a small diameter center and single tapered flighting that requires no pre-drilling. They are so easy to install an old man can do it (I'm 73). Still not convinced? Glen's Outdoors, one of Iceshanty's Sponsors, has a "Sale" going on. See the link.

They spin in with ease and will hold much, much more than a T-handle. Expensive, but well worth it IMO. They are ice climbing anchors that are not rated for climbing. Ice climbing anchors rated for climbing are very expensive.

I wish these guys would sponsor..... they would sell a pickup load of them!

The Iceshanty.com booth was right next to these guys for two years. I got to know them a bit.
