Propane Adaptors
« on: Dec 19, 2011, 11:14 AM »
Hey any of you guys out there ever seen the brass adapters that enable you to fill the small green tanks from a larger bottle? ie 20 lb or larger.  I know that make them and I want to know where to get one?

I have one, got it off ebay ... cost me about 18 bucks for two of them shipped.  That was just over a year ago.  They pay for themselves after a few uses.

Someone correct me if Im wrong, but these should be filled to weight, as in 1LB.
I havnt filled one of these, but I used to do paintball bottles all the time, and I believe its the same idea.
Id put the empty bottle on a digital scale, tare the weight and fill it until the scale read the desired weight.

I believe the small green bottles are 1 lb (16oz on my scale)

That is correct they do not quite fill up.  I still think it is worth it though as opposed to paying $4-5 a cylinder.

Just asking this

But from what I understand there is "stuff" in the bottom of the larger propane tanks, which is why you have to put a filter on them for the buddy heaters.  Is it possible to transfer that stuff to the little tanks too??

If not this is a great Idea!

I use one all the time. Take the 1lbers and put them in the freezer or the garage if really cold out. Put your 20lber in the house where it is warm. Take out to the garage to fill. attach little bottle to larger tank. Turn the tank upside down and open the valve. They will fill to full. Once your 20 lber gets below half a tank the little ones won't fill properly. I keep over 20 small bottles filled all the time. Works for me.

Hey I ordered my Mr.Buddy propane adapter.  I ordered from Amazon costs plus shipping etc. $24.55  Thats not too bad Pro Bass wanted a fortune for shipping.  Hope that cuts down on buying the little throwaway tanks.

I got the hose and a 5# tank I also bought the fill adapter.
The small tanks don't fill all the way but warm full to cold empty tank works allot better.
I normally fish half day 6-12 and the refilled tanks will last me 1.5 trips.
If we are going all day/night I will bring the 5# and hose and use the small tanks on the lantern.

Mine fill full. I'm not sure what you guys are doing wrong. I put my little bottles in the freezer over night. If your big tank is getting low it won't have enough pressure to fill them all the way. When my big tank gets too low I just use it on my BBQ to finish it off. I have a stand by tank which I use which is full.
One thing these little bottles only last about 10 refills. Once some rust and stuff build up on the threads they don't seem to seal right. Had a fire before, I just put a gloved hand over it to put it out. I keep an eye on my bottles and replace the ones in bad shape.

That's a great tip it should prevent rust and help seal.
Thanks

I would not do that. You never put oil or oil products on Oxygen cylinders or Gas cylinders. You have two of the three things for an explosion.

True - the petroleum product aids potential and fuel for fire.
Silicone lube would be the better alternative - I use the spray and the gel
