Using Dead Bait

When you get through using something like the frozen herring as dead bait can you refreeze them for your next trip or do you have to throw them out?

I usually catch smelt for laker fishing. After a day on the ice, I keep all the bait that isn't too beat up and leave it in the shack for the next time that I can't catch them. I guess that is no different than refreezing them. You can also fillet them and use that. I find it just as effective as live bait!

Per  the regs I don't think you can take any bait, dead or alive off the ice. Dylan is ok catching
and leaving the smelt in the shack but cannot take any bait off the ice and take home.

my buddie who is a game warden clarifyed this with me the baid dead or alive has to be outta the same waters as fished cant take bait off dead unless smelt to consume ...and if u leave it on the ice u can reuse it as much as u want and hering is not! a bait fish of vt.................!
