Anyone tried the Frabill Venture??
« on: Feb 08, 2004, 07:46 PM »
Looking at this as an inexpensive shanty. Seems lightweight and fairly roomy. Wondering about the set up and breakdown by one person. I neen a lot of room, 6'6" 350 lbs. plus 130 pound dog.

Any information would ne very helpful. Thanks to all.

I have a Venture.  I've been happy with it. I folds down and is pulled like a sled.  My only complaint so far is that it doesn't fold very small for putting in a car but none of them do.  If you have a pickup or an suv it will be no problem. What kind of dog?

I have a venture. I think that a bigger guy like yourself wouldn't like it I'm a smaller fella and when my buddy and are fishing its kind of cramped with us and equipment. You should see if a store has one set up and try it out first.

Flea - I bought a Venture about 3 weeks ago online from Dick's Sporting Goods - $215 & free shipping (strange, but they don't offer the Venture anymore)... so far, I've been very happy with it... a little tricky to set up in the wind and secure on glare ice, but with a couple of ice anchors, it holds fine.

Room inside is not that bad - it comfortably held myself (6'3" 230), my brother (5'11" 190) & his Newfoundland dog (large)... although we primarily only use it as a shelter - ie, not much jigging while sitting inside...    if you're going to just use it yourself and your dog, you should be fine....

For the $$, it's worked out well for a lightweight portable... as mentioned above, it is a little bulky but I throw it in the back of my pickup... pulling it across the ice/snow is not bad.. just load all you junk on top and bungee it down..

Bought one this year and have put it to the test! Plenty of room compared to some other brands. Great material. As for setting it up, the trick is opening one door and partially opening the other. Turn the open end to the wind so bellows out the shanty. Works great for setup. Two guys are always better for setup.

I got one from The Sports Authority on line last week for $175 + $25 shipping. It was delivered 2 days after I ordered it. Haven't got to use it yet. Thought I could keep my 9yr. old daughter out on the ice longer with it.

I definitely prefer the flip-over designs in terms of ease of setup and wind resistance.  But, for the money, the venture is a good shed.  Just be careful in the wind.  That thing'll end up on the other side of the lake.
