Whitefish

Heard they fight good and taste great. Sounds like fun on the jig rod, never done it.

Are there any not so secret lakes to try? What is the basic jigging set up? Thanks.

head north and west. there are quite a few lakes up here that have em'. not so easy to get tho. but once you find em' the action can be fast. yes they fight hard. probably the best fighting fish in freshwater. they dont tire as easy as other fish. fight right to the hole. i release most of mine because they are very slow growing. half the growth rate of a brookie.

I caught some of my first whitefish last year, and yes, they fight well and taste great!  I didn't end up targeting them much, but I hope to go after some this year down near West Grand (a popular and well known spot for whitefish) or up North.

my fav. whitefish rig is a nickel/ dark green or nickel/ dark blue mid sized pimple w/a 8in. 8lb. test dropper w/ a sz. 6 hook tipped w/ cut smelt or worms. tap it several times on the bottom, bring up 12in. pause. no bites repeat. occasionally bring it up a couple feet and let it flutter to the bottom. that will bring em' in from a distance. they are lite bitters so watch your rod tip. let them start to take your line sideways before setting the hook unless they slam it the first hit which they do occasionally. good luck!

Thanks all. This sounds like my kind of fishing, good fighting fish on the jig rod. I may try a few for the pan but will be mindful that their slow growers.

if you are on a lake that allows you to keep any size, keep the mid sized ones. they start to spawn around 16-18in. which is, by the way, is a 7-9yr. old fish. better have a good drag! if youre up my way give me a holler. i can put you on some.
