We hit Lake Owen this morning.  There is open water near the dike and the handicap dock.  We fished the south shore and had between 6" - 8" of ice.  Fishing started a little slow as we were fishing right off the bottom in about 8ft of water.  We kept getting hits when we dropped in a new line and figured out that the fish were about 3ft below the ice.  From then on it was game on!!  We fished till noon then had to come back in to Laramie.  We iced 3 rainbows and 21 brookies.  The biggest brookie was 13.5".  It was great finally getting onto the ice.  Another vehicle showed up while we were out there and they sounded like they were having a good time as well.

I took a lot of pictures, however, they are now on the bottom Lake Owen!!  First phone I have lost to the fish gods!!  I was due for a new one anyway!!

As for the drive in, the snow is starting to get pretty deep.  I have pretty high ground clearance so I didn't have any trouble.  Looks like someone else had some trouble at the turnoff up in the forest at some point today.  We did see a monster buck rutting pretty heavy as we drove in.  I figured that he was 30" wide and had a 8" drop tine.  Of course those pictures are also on the phone!!  Look for him around the sage brush hillside on the way in.

Overall we had a great time and it was good to be on the ice!  Here is a picture of some that we brought home for dinner, of course this picture was taken on my friend's phone!!

Awesome Wyoming_Man! Looks like you had fun. Those brookies are some mighty fine eats. I lost a huge brookie today right at the hole. I swear his back was 4' wide when I saw him at the hole and then in a flash he was gone! Good to see some of our fellow hardwater nuts having early success as well!!

Went up and fished Owen again today.  Started the trip up into the mountains by seeing some elk.  Next we saw the same buck from last week.  This is the best picture I could get of him.  Unfortunately, you can't see the drop tine in this picture.

We got to the lake and picked up where we left off last week.  We caught only one rainbow this time, but it was a nice 17" bow.  We ended up with about 25 brookies and missed so many more!  The kids had a great time and so did the dads!

We finally had to load up and head back to town.  While loading up we looked over and saw this guy.

It was a beautiful day in the mountains!!  I am pretty sure thats the last trip we will be taking in there this year.  The snow is getting deeper and harder to get in with a truck.

Anyone have an idea on current ice thickness in the Snowy's?  Heading up to the Brooklyn area tomorrow on skis, and wondering if its worthwhile to bring the hand auger and gear.  Its usually too thick by the time I'm skiing up there to have much luck with a mora, but seems like its been pretty warm until the last couple of days.

I was just wondering is it normal to be able to drive a vehicle to Owen this time of year or is snowmachine usually the only way to access?
