Tip-up line
« on: Nov 06, 2011, 09:21 PM »
What lb tip-up line is ideal for handling?  I've read that braid cuts hands, is braided tipup line designed different?
What lb should be sufficient?

Ive been for using 36lb Dacron (greenspot) for 40 years no problems. I attach an american made sampo ball bearing swivel to that and run a florocarbon leader off that. No need for expensive 9 (and cutting)braid Just. make sure you dry out the dacro when you are done. Anyway i have never had a problem with the dacron.

i just get the tip-up line....im trying the waxed kind this year, but I've been using just the plain braided tip-up line.   dont like the rubber coated crap,  it's stiff and have a problem with knots breaking.  but besides that i just get the spools of tip-up line, one per tip-up.

What lb tipup line do you use?
Would 50lb be over kill?  I've sliced my fingers with braid while surf fishing ans read enough posts of guys slicing hands ice fishing but at the same time dont want to get too thick of line like a rope, lol

Problem is i've never seen tipup line in person so i dont know how it looks and feels.

I use 20 lb on mine, 30lb nylon coils off too bad on my Beaver Dams. I also use 20 and 30 lb dacron. I've never gotten cut from it, but a few friction burns.

think the most i've used is 30 lb.  it's only a main line, hook's not attached to it.  but i've never caught a fish anywhere near 25 lbs so i use 25 or 30.  like the 25 cause i can fit more on the spool incase i hook up with a runner in 40+ ft of water.  but it's more of what will make you feel comfortable.  In nopatcong atleast 50 may be overkill, but if you fish alot of lakes that have bigger pike in them, 50 may not be.

I run the Woodstock, heat stretched nylon braid, it stays limp and doesn't coil and it doesn't freeze ! I use the 20lb on the tip ups and the 12 lb on my big conventional reels for Lake trout ! Blood red so its easy to see in the water and on the ice ! Best line I've found so far !

I'm not worried about line breaking, more concerned with handling it with bare hands and getting cut.

i only got cut once, and that's when i grabbed the leader on a big gater.   other then that just dont grab it too hard or wrap it around your hand.   just remember that if the fish wants to run and starts pulling too hard, just let go.  found that the fish doesnt run too far if it feels no weight on it.  but if your concerned about cuts, i'd just go with specified tip-up line just to start out with.  and dont go nuts buying 5 tip-ups.  get 2 or 3 to start off with.  i have put out 5 with 5 diff lines b4, just trying to figure out what line i like best.  The fun part is testing it all  ;D

It's your first tip-ups, might sound weird, but go cheap.  they all do the same thing.  there are so many pros and cons to them all.  just get the wooden X type.  they have the vertical reel that reduces the tension when a fish runs, and if tip-ups aren't for you (which would blow my mind)  you didnt invest that much to start with, and if you like it you have room in your wallet for buying more being you didnt tap yourself out buying $20 tip-ups.  They work and contrary to what anyone will tell you, there is no such thing as the Perfect tip-up.  But this is only my opinion. So take it for what it's worth
