I just got mine.  Can't wait to try it.
Used my uncles fly reel combo last year.  I would say deeper than 15 feet makes it a little too much of a pain.  But shallow water hole hopping it is just awesome.

Hi just joined the site, and just picked up one today too. Seems like a nice combo, with the cork was longer though.

Been looking at them, and I am intrigued.  Not sure if I will get one this year or not.  The wife asked for ideas / wish list for Christmas,  so I put it on the list.  That means I can't go out and buy it before then.  They do seem to have some advantages over spinning reels though.

I got the fly reel bug a couple of season's ago,  the aresenal has grown each year!   I do a lot of pan/perch fishing and the straightline presentation works great.

I bought the 32, 27, and 24 tightlining combos.  Just waiting for ice to test.

Who makes that black one? I like the distance of the reel from the rod.

The black reel is an Ice Tech Razor reel,  just picked that up last month, have not been out on the ice with it yet.  But it is meant to allow easier handling with gloves on if you fish outside a lot.   it also has a 12:1 retrieve rate so it will allow me to fish deeper and get the fish/bait up quicker.   looking forward to trying it this year.  I loaded it with some 6lb test to try out straightline on walley.  But they are pricey!  Only time will tell if it was worth the $$.

12:1?  Hmm...  Line retrieval rate was my biggest complaint last year when trying to straight line.  I had a hard time keeping pressure on a fish once they were hooked.  Liked the idea otherwise.  That might be worth a look!

WOW!! I guess they are spendy!! $85.00 (+$5.00 shipping) at the mfg website. I'm all for quality gear, but that's going be a tough sell to the Mrs.!! That being said let us all know how she pans out. I do have a bit of pull around here yet!!  ;D

12:1?????????more like 1:1 every revolution is one revolution.......Line pickup is 12 inches, for the price they arent worth it, is an aluminum schooley that the maker has marked sky high because he spent to much on machining.......Rant over.....

All you need to make your own version of the Ice Tech reel is an old pulley from an old clothesline....make a bracket to mount to your rod handle and make a handle to turn it.....for $85, I won't own one of those.....way overpriced !

Nice idea Topher,  wow the clothes line reel looks almost exactly the same and one could do some custom painting.  Agree these Ice Techs are overpriced.   I thought about ordering one a few times before I actually did but I wanted to at least give it a try and see how well they work.   They were at the Ice Show this last weekend and I talked with them a little.    Only time will tell what they should be worth or if the next "mod" is the Topher Clothes Line Reel.   Careful the Topher Line Reel could be the next Smitty Sled.

You got that Ice Tech mounted on a Northland stick?  Those new rods they (Northland) put out this year a pretty nice, I really like those types of reel seat/grips.  I have a feeling one will end up in my bag before the end of the season!

Yep you got it, I was up at the big "C" store, was looking for a good medium weight rod to pair the Ice Tech with, as I thought I might use it for more crappie or walleye.  I was actually thinking a fenwick rod as I had bought one of their new UL  but came across the new Northland rods. The reel seat and wax/cork grip seemed to hit home, so I paired it up with the Ice Tech reel.

i bought the 24 ul combo but switched the reel to a 30 in ul. if i'd buy again i think i'd go with the 27 in quicktip. it looked better than the 24 in ul

The 27" Straightline combo worked great this last week. THought it would be a pain in 20 fow, but it wasn't as big of a pain as I thought. Look forward to using it tomorrow all day for crappies.......
