That would be Yes here also, I don't want to be out on the ice someday with a heater that won't work so I figure it's worth the money. I can't tell you if you have to have it or not as I have never gone without having a filter on.

The filters are cheap insurance ! I was able to snake my hose up thru the lower frame of my old buddy so now all I have to do is hook to the tank and go !

i use the Mr heater hooked up to a ten gallon tank without a filter. i had a buddy heater with a black hose and a 20 gallon tank with no filter and had trouble with it always. someone said i needed the green hose instead. i think i needed a filter. love the Mr heater as long as you watch the sides of your shanty don't get against it in a wind storm. go fishing and have fun.

Does anyone have the Big Buddy heater? It takes 2 of the 1lb cans, I bought the hose for my smaller buddy heater and hook it to a 20lb tank. Is there a splitter for the hose that will run 2 lines off of a 20lb tank so tha if purchased the Big Buddy I could still just use the 1 tank and not have to bring 2? That owuldREALLY suck to have to drag 2 tanks out.

Thanks!!!

I run the "green" hose, which is still black in color, to my Buddy heater without a filter.  No problems yet.

Tractor Supply carries a lot of Mr Heater accessories.

I have a Menards by me and they don't sell doodley squat for Buddy Heaters. Tractor supply sells the filters and hoses here though.

I have the Big Buddy and run off a 20# and a filter. Works great. As far as a splitter goes you should be able to get one from an RV sales and service store. They use the splitter on campers with dual cylinders.

So does everyone mostly just use the Portable Mr Buddy Heater? I saw some at Walmart for $85 and since the wife works there I could get one for 10% off.$76.50 .

No need to split it off. I just leave a 1#er on the opposite side.
I have heard you do not need anything on the other side but I have always just left an empty on the other side.
Works just fine for me.

Use my big Buddy Heater on a 5 LB tank and do not hook anything to the other side and never had a problem with it.

My Big Buddy works with hose plugged into either side. I always use an empty one pound bottle on the side not being used. I have to pull filter of of the 20lb. bottle when above 9000 ft.

For the Big Buddy heater, you can leave one side open for the small tanks and hook up your bulk adapter hose to the other.  I do it all the time.  I also run a filter, but this year I got the Mr. Heater Quick Connect Hose which you can use without a filter.  I guess it has something to do with the regulator, I would think that if you knew the right pressure to adjust the regulator to you could use any hose with a regulator on it to do the same thing, but I don't know that.  I chose to just pay and then I don't have to worry about it.  The hose is designed to store in the base of the heater too.

Here's the hose:
