I'm looking for information on how to make speed reels to install in my shanty.  Any help would be great.

Speed reels are traditionally used for fishing smelt.  They are usually made by mounting a wooden dowel(approx. 1-1/2 inch diameter and 8 inches long) on the wall of a shanty, positioned over the hole.  The dowel is mounted on the horizontal and in such a way that it can spin freely on it's center axis.  On the dowel you have wrapped a length of string.  On the dowel next to the string and wrapped in the opposite direction you have some monofilament.  The monofilament is installed on the dowel on some sort of spool of larger diameter as to give a gear ratio.  You then attach the lure, bait, hook or whatever you intend to use, to the mono and lower it to the appropriate depth.  Once depth is established you attach a small float.  When the float moves you yank the string and up comes the bait, hopefully with fish attached.  The difference between the diameter of the dowel and the spool on which you installed the mono
determines the rate of retrieve.  Usually it's about 4:1, in other words one foot of pull on the string=four feet of retrieve on the line.  This design enables smelt fishermen to bring up fish extremely fast.  Hence the term "speed reel".  This is necessary as smelt cruise in large schools.  Once you start getting hits you want to be able to get the bait back down quickly before the school moves off...

My apologies, I've been having difficulty with the picture host I use.  I've modified the pic in my previous post, should work now.  Sometimes if the pic doesn't come up just try hitting the refresh button on your browser a couple times.

If you want to use the 20" bike wheel why not put the whole bike in the shanty take off the tire put the line on the rim Lift the bike off the ice and when you get hit just peddle. This way you get your exersise along with fish!
