cheep spring bobber
« on: Sep 26, 2011, 09:42 AM »
I just wondered if anyone has ever done this. I take a spring out of a disposable lighter and use it for a spring bobber. It takes a little work to get it to work right ,but when it is done ,works great.  Can be adjusted just by streaching it out,but do this before you install it on your pole, streach it to far and it is junk.   Jerry

Springs out of ball point pens work also.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Where do ya find one of those?  ;D  I hunted all over for some 3-4 years ago when I used that trick. Seems like everything is a "rollerball' or felt type now...
I inserted the spring into a 1" piece of soft vinyl tubing, then inserted that into the end of my guide eye. Worked well.

The click type of ball point is getting hard to find unless ya buy new ones to get the spring. They used to be around the office at all times, but I think I'll stay retired and find something else to use. I did have nine of em in my hand about thirty seconds ago though and I'm sure I still have em in drawers all over the house. At my age that is a lifetime supply.  ;D

I don't know what your definition of cheap is, but i consider a $3.95 marmish strike indicator fairly cheap.

I failed to add that inserting a ball point spring into a piece of soft vinyl tubing an inch or so long will make it really sensitive, you might want to experiment with this. as the longer the piece of tubing, the more sensitive it is. I used the leftover air tubing from air pumps for this purpose.  ;D

You CAN buy a single "E" string for a buck-and-a-half. Don't think quality counts on this one.  ;)

Any bar band will give you enough strings to last you a year or 4 just ask. They thought it was funny.  Wife didnt when the band announced that I asked the (female thank GOD) guitar player for her used or broken G-Strings!!!!!! :)    )|(

Wire tie ;D

I like it...how do you attach to rod? I'm thinking 1 or 2 small cable ties cinched enough to hold it, yet adjustable or twist ties ?

I gave that setup to my friend or I would get you some better pics. As I recall I glued 2 or 3 pieces of 1/8 foam together then slotted it to accept the cable tie. I pushed the cable tie through the foam with a drop of super glue on it. I then bent the end of the cable tie up with some needle nose pliers just for the heck of it.  I simply pushed the foam onto the rod tip then reset the tip and then reset the tip with hot melt.  It's adjustable in length.

I formed the eye on the tip of the cable tie by flattening it out a bit and melting a hole through it with a hot needle.

I made the setup for myself for sight fishing. My good friend and fishing mentor, "The Old Man" liked it. It's his now. He hammered the gills in shallow using the little rod. His eyesight stinks so I rigged it with yellow stren. Between the yellow stren and the springy thing, he had the advantage. Might have to paint the springy fluorescent green for him this year :-\

Might make a couple more this year.

Decided to experiment with the CT (cable tie) Bobber.

I took the smallest that's made and drilled out the clip in the receiving end, then bent it 90* (stays in place). Took another tie and used it to cinch the bobber to the rod. It's nice and snug but able to adjust it easily.

It's a little too stiff for micro jigs, but should work real well with larger jigs and small spoons. And not being made of metal, should resist freezing up as quickly, especially with a shot of silicone/Pam.

Best part?....got hundreds of these things so no $ involved!

I'm an electrician...I have thousands and thousands of cable ties.

I still prefer a balanced rod, line, rod setup and I'm a line watcher. If you can't see the bite without a contraption on the end of the rod....sumtin ain't right!
