Celebrate first day of Summer!!
« on: Jun 21, 2011, 02:30 PM »
Went up in the Snowies this morning to try my luck on the lakes ice fishing.  There was a new layer of snow on the ground, but the wind quickly blew it around.  I will try to tell the story with pictures.

As you can see the clouds were surrounding the peaks.  Down in that field of white is a lake somewhere!

Finally got to the lake and as you can see there was some overflow.  Early this morning I Google earthed Mirror lake to try to locate a suitable place.

I had to dig down a little bit but quickly ran into the overflow.  The overflow was about 18" deep.  I then augered down till the head of the jiffy was barely out of the water.  Next I tried chipping down with the bar.  I never did make it down through ice.  This bar is about 5' long and as you can see this is only 6" out of the water.  Unfortunately I had to give up on Mirror lake.   :'(

Had to head back to the truck and took this parting shot.  If only I had brought an extension, or 2, or 5!!!

So there is still a little bit of snow up there!!

Since I couldn't fish Mirror due to the overflow I figured that I would go higher up where there would be less overflow.  Headed to Belamy lake which is the lake that was in that field of white earlier.  I went out to where I thought the lake was and started digging down in the snow.  I dug and dug and dug.

I had to build steps into the snow so I could get in and out.  This is some pretty desperate ice fishing to go through this much trouble!!  Finally after digging down 4ft I hit water.  The overflow was not bad as it was only about 8".  I pulled the auger out and drilled down to till the head barely cleared the water.  Once again I grabbed the bar and chipped down.  FINALLY I BROKE THROUGH!!!  Right into mud! >:(  I missed the lake!  I was not about to dig another 4ft hole so I finally gave up on ice fishing in the summer.

Where I thought the lake was.

Where I think the lake is!!   ::)

Headed over to Lake Marie to check it out and take some pics.

They won't be using this restroom anytime soon!!  Last week you could barely see the building so the snow is melting pretty fast.

Headed back down the mountain and took this pic of the creek.  This is only about 10 miles from where I took the other pics, but its about 1500ft lower!

I may go up and do some scouting of the lakes up higher like South Gap or maybe even go over the top and check out the Shelf lakes.  South Gap has some pretty nice rainbows in it and the Shelf lakes have golden trout.  Thats snowmobile country right now.  If I do I will keep everyone posted!

Wow, I just google earthed them lakes, what a beautiful area you live in. I am super jealous that you even have snow there. You could guarantee that I would be rolling around in it and making snow angles.   LOL.

I tend to celebrate the first day of summer by hating life....lol

So ready for it to be 10 degrees again. So ready to run out to the pond after work and punchin a hole to try and ice a few perch before dark. So ready to stop sweatin my life away!!! Drank literally 2 gallons of water on Sunday!!!

72Chevy-  The lakes up there do not winter kill because there is very little vegetation in them and they are deep.  Most of the lakes are 40+ feet deep and only 200 yds across.

Here are some pics ofrom a week and a half ago.  This first one is Silver lake that is along the highway.  I think you could almost ice fish it now with a plank!  Maybe not!

Here is Bellamy that I was trying to get down to.  I don't think I was too far off, just too much ice.
