Ya trapping stores have them like Murry's etc. I just bought a Loring pack basket. They are not cheap, but come with a lifetime warranty and are rugged and maintenance free.

My grandfather.

But you can get them at any of the big box outdoors stores though.

I got mine mine from my uncle when he moved south :)  I saw some at Dick's the other day, everything was on sale, as it's the end of season, but when I picked it up, it felt really cheap compared to mine...the wicker slats seemed thinner and the pack seemed flimsier because of it.

My uncle has had his since I don't know when, but he's almost 70 now, and I bet he's had that pack since the 60's.  My advice is pay the extra money and get something of good quality, because it will last and you will probably be able to pass it down...

I would love to make my own. There is an Adirondack folk art school near me. They offer a one day class on making packbaskets. I took a basket weaving class back in boy scouts, and I think I could at least get the basics. If I could get the right materials, I could probably teach myself how to make one, but the first few would be ugly.

I'd love to make my own!  Where abouts is that school you're referring to?  May be a nice family day trip.

I have one that was my grandfathers.  It's from the 30's.  He, my father, and I all used it for trapping and ice fishing.  It's in great shape, but all it carries now are my wife's flowers for decoration. ::)

Its in Luzerne, near Lake George.

I'm just now looking at their website for the first time. They've expanded quite a bit since the first time I read about it. I might have to check some of this out if I get some free time this summer.

Sorry, I can't do the pic thing as I am old  >:( We have a lot of willow along the Missouri river and I use small branches for the frame and strip willow bark for the basket, weave the basket while the willow bark strips are still fairly green and when they dry the basket is pretty sturdy. Lash the branches for the frame together with wet leather strips so when they dry they tighten up. I spray it with some shellac when it's dry and add a couple shpoulder straps out of some military cordage.
