channel question
« on: Feb 19, 2011, 10:48 AM »
I was recently told that crappie will move into channels shortly after ice out is there any truth to this? I live in north east indiana and the channel i was told to target has a run off drain and is 6 - 8 ft deep. Was also wondering if there would there be any chance of catching any pike or walleye in this channel after ice out also.

We have caught crappies during late ice in channels.  I would think they would be there at ice out. However it usually is like the first or second week of march for late ice so I dont know if they would be there yet if open water happens now.  I also got a pike while late ice crappie fishing a couple of years ago.

The north channel on fox lake used to have early spring crappie you could catch with tube jigs.

Can you get to that channel on fox without a boat? I have one but i like to fish from the bank whenever possible.

You used to be able to. But the last time I was there was a number of years ago, so I couldn't tell you what the case is today.

channels are a prime spot for crappie or gills this time of the year and into march especially where there is wood in the water. also channels are usually one of the last places at least for me to get on the ice and usually the first
