Gem lake?
« on: Feb 08, 2011, 09:58 AM »
Just wondering if anybody has any reports from Gem lake.  I usually try it once every winter and have never had any success. I was thinking of giving it another shot now that I have a flasher I might be able to find some fish.  I've seen some pictures of 12" perch and monster trout that keep me trying.

I have never been but have been thinking about going down there, if you go post how you do.

Will do.  I noticed some one has been fishing the river near Johns Hole bridge.  I don't think my life insurance policy is big enough for me to chance that ice.  I bet there are some hogs under that bridge tho.

I've seen some pictures of some nice rainbows and browns caught ice fishing.  I've personally caught some good sized browns down there on soft water.  There are also some cutthroats in that stretch of river but I've never caught any.  There are a few monsters caught down there every year and it doesn't get very much pressure, especially during ice season.

Fished from 10 to 12 today and caught a couple of whitefish chub things (not sure what they are) one was pretty good sized 18", I also caught a 19" brown that put up a good fight.  I'll have to do some more exploring around there, nice to be able to catch fish only a few minutes from the house.

Where abouts is good to fish on gem lake, if you don't mind sharing. Not looking to take over anyone's secret spot but would like to be able to narrow it down a little. also is there anywhere i should avoid for safety reasons?

Gem lake is between Shelly and Idaho falls it is about 4 miles long 300 yards wide it has Suckers-Trout/browns/cuts/rainbow and a few macks carp/chubs/a few nice perch if you can find them. plowed parking lots at the 2 boat ramps.other places along it to pull over and try.Fun and close. Good ice no slush as of today 2/11 hope this helps.

Gem lake is actually part of the Snake river just south of Idaho Falls.  The city of Idaho Falls has a hydro electric plant that produces a slow wide area in the river a few miles long.  Its only about 40 feet deep.  The Fish and Game has reported several times in our local paper that it produces some of the biggest trout in this area.  As far as where to go your guess is as good as mine.  I've only fished it a few times and never really spent any time exploring it.  I've only tried down near the dam, but I see people fishing it near the bridge quite often.

Hmmm....what the heck was it?  At 18", could it have been a Lake Whitefish?  Take any pics?

If it was an 18" Chub , that would be very close to the State Record . My guess would be White fish or Sucker . The fishing is better by the Bridge . Access is better by the dam , Just walk down the boat Ramp Curt G.

not sure about the chub things but fish and game stocked the Idaho Falls Green Belt area with white sturgeon ranging from 18" to 3 feet. Not sure if its possible but do you think they could have gotten into Gem Lake from there? I know its unlikely that its what was caught but just a thought.
