No matter how fun they seem...
« on: Jan 15, 2018, 11:25 AM »
These new drill auger rigs can bite you....

Been using drill augers for a few years now.. Just recently purchased a Ridgid gen 5 drill...

Headed out to do some ice testing while the family was putting on skates and such...

So I drilled a few holes with my 8" Mora, gearboxed clam plate, and new drill...

Gen 5 has more to give it seems... So just for chits and grins, I switched my drill into high gear and tried to rip a hole lighting fast...

I should have been paying attention better, but I was just "having fun" at this point...

As soon as I hit the trigger, in high gear, the bit immediately flung/walked, into my boot... Duh!

I saw my boot, then felt my foot, I thought my day was over...

Gathering all my stuff together, not expecting to get back on the ice in the next day or two, I went inside, had my wife put some plastic on the floor, expecting a boot full of blood..

Turned out to be pretty minor, so I rubbed some dirt in it and hit the ice with kiddos...

Got lucky this time, little scar, and cut up half-lived boot..

Be careful guys, especially if you are letting someone else run your rig... (I think the 8" Mora might be especially dangerous, due to how the blades extend half an inch beyond the 7" flights)

Another "learn for my dumba$$" PSA post...

Yikes!  Glad it was only minor Scratcher!  RIP Mr. Boot.  I think everyone has nicked themselves at one time or another.  I remember finding a huge slice in my Arctic Cat snowmobile bibs that I used to wear to ice fish.  Sometimes you're not even aware its happened, then you say HOLY CR*P!

Happy you're ok. ;)

OUCH !!!!...that Mora blade sticking out some could pose a big problem...good thing to note for new purchasers . On another note how is the 8 inch/gear box set up working ...I have seen some posting here and FB with some issues from leaking grease/oil and just blowing apart.

This same scenario flashed through my head yesterday when trying out my new brushless drill spinning a Finn Bore auger. Glad it weren’t too bad.

Augers made for use with power generally have a chisel point in the center so the blades wont walk to the side. Those who penny pinch and try and use a auger designed for  hand use better be careful.

Wowser. Actually got meat. What lesson did we learn here? Some years ago I got the leg of some coveralls snagged by the IceGator while I was in stupid mode. It was like Marcel the Rapist. Instant stop on the Gator or I would have been chewed up and spit out. Glad you're okay.

Seems to be working great, mine is the aluminum housed one, they sent to the people that had their boxes recalled..

I would think any of them that are leaking grease that they have way too much grease inside... Its not a sealed type of box...

Drill setups are far from pinching pennies...

This is more of a case of if it seems like you’re having too much fun, you probably are! Lmao

I’m glad it wasn’t any more serious. It could have been way worse. The boot absorbed most of the damage. Ever wonder why they use to use leather as armor? Hey, at least a new boot is cheaper than an ER visit!

True, I have three great drills, not bought for fishing, bought for the tool that they are...

Also have an awesome gas Eskimo...

Not trying to pinch pennies, more about shaving pounds. The Mora is the lightest 8" there is, that I know of anyway..

I wasn't talking about the drill. If you are going to be using power to the auger the auger should have a point in the center so it won't want to walk to the side. As far as I know the mora is just blades, no center point, made for very slow turning.

Yeah, right through leather, insulation, gore TeX, cambrel lining, wool sock, epidermis, and finally slightly into the dermis layer...

Just think some newbie taking a quicky test drive at the local launch with tennis shoes!

Got lucky for sure!  Once you get that deep, another 1/8” would have been a mess! I never take my drill out of low gear, way too squirrely.  I guess the gear reduction must make it feel a bit more manageable?...

That's about it too, anything more and much worse..

Yeah, the gears cut RPMs in half..

Glad you did not suffer a worse injury keep a watch on the cut for any infection. Just my humble opinion think all of us get to concerned about cutting speed of augers and forget at times to use proper caution with power equipment.

Wow, first off glad you are ok! I was just about convinced to do this for the next ice season now I’m second guessing a bit. Do the augers tend to walk when using this drill attachment?

I was trying to run it in high speed like an evil force about to take over all that which is frozen water (not recommended by me or anyone)... Hit my boot, dream over...

Running it like a responsible human being, I've never had an issue...

Nah, no difference with using a drill to spin it. Other factors like blade geometry and sharpness will be the important factors. Some brands are just a little "walkier" than others. The drill setup is still the way to go whether through a Clam plate or Kovac or other adaptor.
Ice Scratcher just had mental lapse.

Something to be said about having a center point on an auger. Glad mine has one.

Makes me feel a little better, I also just saw a video on fb from a local guy who just had a drill attachment no plate, he was shooting the video “at first, I might add” trying to drill with one hand and walked right across so that kind scared me too, but he even said right after that he had to use two hands

Had my electric eat a glove and give me an owie last year. Dark and I picked it up by the auger and put it in the sled. When I did something caught the trigger and it ate the glove off my hand in an instant. Lesson learned. Never had one get a boot tho.
