Nor'Easter Rod/Reel Combo?
« on: Feb 14, 2011, 12:06 PM »
Hi All,

Im planning on picking up a set of Nor'Easters for next season and have been on the hunt for a good rod/reel combo for them.
I have been given some great advice from current members. But just wanted to make a quick post for some other ideas. The fish I target most is Salmon and Trout. I will all go after Pickerel and Bass occasionally. So i would like a setup that can handle these 4.

Any and all info is much appreciated.
Also if you could provide links to the items you suggest that would be great.

Thx again

I dont know much about salmon and trout but i would think a smooth baitcasting reel would be good as you can set the tension on free spool. BPS has a mega cast bait casting reel for 25 bucks and they did have some diawa rods med heavy 32 inch for 16 bucks but i have not been there in months its a cheap out but if you only use it ice fishing it should last mine is 3 yrs old and still working good.

Im not a baitcaster..never been. I use a 2011 32" St. Croix with the reel seat along with an abu. And I also use a 28" Thorne bros pro with an pfleuger pres.. I have had no issues with either of these setups and love seeing that purple flag waving me over. I'd say anything you were comfortable with would work in a nor easter... I myself would def. stay away from anything UL! Also..some might say my reels are overkill....but I wanted to use them in open water also...so I went a smidge bigger. I put 20# power pro on my spools and then tied about ten feet of flouro with an albright knot. that flouro really pops out of the "line holder" on the Nor easter!

Awesome guys, thanks for all the info.

Is there any truth to these ice fishing rod eyes being "freeze proof"?
For example HT Jig-A-Whopper
It says it has "Lightweight, ice resistant single foot "D" guides"

My main concern with these types of setups is the line freezing to the eyes once they get wet.
Im looking at this as my possible setup, with the advice of a verteran Ice Shanty Angler.
Mitchell Avocet II Silver 1000
BassPro 3' Rod

But i don tknow if the "anti freeze" eyes of the jig rod are any better than the BassPro rod..

Check out the Eagle Claw Brave Eagle BRV202-3 matched with a Gunnison 30 spinning reel. The rod is a 36" med action rod with large eyes.  I use these set ups for Lake Trout down to perch and love them!

I measured my Ice Fishing Box last night and its exactly 3ft. Im worried that these 3ft rods wont fit.
Anyone have any suggestions for a 30in-34in rod?

PS...I know this may sound noobish, but i never really measured any to know. Does the length of the rod include the grip?

im pretty sure a 3' rod will work, you just have to angle it up more.

Hi Pete,

The problem with the 3' rod is it wont fit in my ice fishing box.

I cant seem to find a 34in medium rod =/
