It can be as cold as it wants and I'll go fishing.  But cold and windy can be tough in a small portable.  When the sides are flapping and popping, it's hard to enjoy the fishing.

Never too cold with the shanty but my favorite is a day in the 30's when you can just hang out on the ice without the heavy gear and the brews dont freeze  ;D
All fishermen are liars except for you and me,and sometimes I wonder about you!

Never. Last year at Heikki Lunta it was -20 with 20mph winds. I was there. In fact, I ran all the way across the lake with jumbo perch in hand. When i got to weigh-in, tears were frozen to my face. I'm doing it again this year.

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I  don't want to waste the trip; maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so m

HE77, I don't even understand the question.
Pat's answer of "when the lake freezes to the bottom" came the closest.
But even that doesn't mean the air is too cold; it just means the lake wasn't deep enough.

As a native Upstate (Albany) New Yorker I thought growing up that anything colder than zero was just silly.  Then I moved to Hackensack Minnesota for a year and actually fished outside in-40 with a wind of about 10 mph!!  I was young and foolish then, but now I am older and have a Fish trap!  There is no such thing, unless the heater gives out or the wind rips the cover off the fish trap!

Hey Brian, I thought you had a thesis to write.  Get your head out of the ice.
By the way, it is never too cold and I have never used a shelter here in New England!

My coldest day was on the "frozen surface of the Queen" last January at -10 F with a 20-30 mph wind.  Lake George can get nasty if you are not dressed for it.  I have some heavy duty Cabellas bib overalls and parka that are good in that kind of weather.  Problem is handling tipups, fish, etc.  I have finally caved in and purchased a fishtrap scout and a portable heater.  Now if I can just stay anchored.

This year will probably be the "coldest weather in a boat" on the Queen.  I guarantee you that someone will be out water skiing next week if it hits high 50s or 60.

Never too cold. Last season in Western Massachusetts was -17 @ 4:30 a.m. with not much wind, thank the lord. It did warm up to -2 before we left the lake around 2pm. One week later I was in Miami where it was 95! I thought I was going to get sick as a dog but only got a soar throut. The nice thing about the really cold weather is it leaves the panzies at home.

Went out Wednesday morning for a great day of fishing, the temp was -36 degrees F. the wind was calm, so it wasn't bad. As long as the wind isn't gusty, I can handle extreme cold. (by the way , it was a great day of fishing)

When school was canceled last year because it was -40 I said hook up the sleds were goin' fishin.  I never have not gone out becouse of the cold,  but up here on Lake Superior, the wind can make fishing imposible at times.
