How to use wood Decoys
« on: Jan 03, 2011, 04:24 PM »
I have been spearing for a few years now and was wondering how u use the wood decoys?  Never tried and would like to.  Do u just tie it to a pole and go that way?  Is there some thing that moves it for u?  Any pointers would b great.  Thanks for any advice.

Some guys use a short wooden jigging stick (blackhawk) but I think most (me) use the regular line that you would use for a live decoy that goes to the center of the hole.

The way a wooden decoy works is that it needs to sink very slowly and level from front to back and side to side but it also needs to move forward as you drop it in the water (a little extra front weight) so that way when you snap the line up ward it will jet forward and a circle is made by having the tail fin bent to the right or left. The less lead you put in the quicker your decoy will move but too little and it will float back to the surface and if you put too much lead in you won't get much movement or none at all. A true working decoy will always point head up and tail down when hanging out of the water. It's kinda tricky at first but once you get used to it you can make that decoy do what ever you want

I use cheap push button fishing reels and attach them to the house above the hole. I like the reels because you can set the drag so if a fish takes off with the decoy, the line wont break.

You can leave the decoys sit still, but I like to swim them quite a bit.

Ha...Ha....Ha.... great minds think alike, I do mine the same way cause I would hate to have a big one rip off one of my wooden decoys (they are irreplaceable cause every one is unique)
