Too small to be dinks
« on: Jan 03, 2011, 03:36 PM »
Tried a new pond today. I had recently got permission to fish this pond. The owner told me that there might not even be fish in it. He said it was nearly drained a year ago when they were doing some dirt work in the area. They installed a new overflow and is currently full.  The pond is less than 2 acres, 5ft deep with plenty of vegetation. They were biting good, but man were they small. I kept moving, but couldn't catch anything larger than 3 inches. Hopefully this is a result of a fishkill and the size of fish will increase in the coming years. I think these are a green sunfish?? Look like a slender bluegill with a bass looking head.

Do the green sunfish get much size to them??

I'll be hitting this pond for my flathead bait in the spring.

I've caught a ton over 7 inches, while catching my catfishing bait! Never tried eating one though.  I would ask the owner if he would mind if you put 25 black crappie, and 100 bluegills in it, and if he agrees to it, tell him you'll also be happy to get rid of his Christmas tree while your at it. Perfect time to create a honey hole with very little work.

Nope, they have a tendency to over small ponds and become nothing but dinks, experts say no white crappies.

Thanks for the info. I happen to have 3 christmas trees picked up off the curb over the weekend. Now time to start working on the fish part.

Last tip, the pro's don't like to drop X-mas trees because they say the pine sap smell takes to long to wear off and crappie don't like it, however, over time they'll work great.  If you want faster results stick with dried lumber like old stumps if you want faster results.

high tide-

the problem with xmas trees is that not the smell so much but there is a chemical reaction with the sap and water which actually will kill off a small pond or lake for that matter. ive been told by an old timer to burn the tree first then drop it in. now i cannot contradict any of this as i have not tried burning then dumping. i did however years ago try using an xmas tree and come the following year i had no sizeable fish at all hardly any fish for that matter. old stumps and rocks and pvc, tires, pallets they all work great
Got one goin'!

build it out of PVC like these have also heard or building a checker board pattern base with vertical pieces coming up with them bering built from pvc less of a chance of snags versus xmas trees and stump too

They look like warmouths. If so they do get edible size. I used to own some property in Spencer that had a lake like that. I put about a dozen smallmouth bass in there. They really helped the lake. Plus they will not reproduce. After a few years I really noticed a difference in the quality of the fish. I would also twice a year put in about 5 pounds of fathead minnows. I would put them in the spring and fall. right before and right after the ice. Plus catching the smallmouths over adn over was great fun. They got to be pigs from all the little warmouths.
