Christmas Gift Story to Share
« on: Jan 04, 2011, 12:45 PM »
Just have to share this:
I have a five and 1/2 year old that has been fishing with me since he was 2.  He takes after Dad and loves ice fishing the most.  He has actually been learning how to use my Vexilar this past year and has almost got to the point of not needing a bobber.
Well for Christmas my Brother bought him a new fishing pole and tackle box....he wrapped the tackle box in a Vexilar box.  Needless to say, when my Son tore of the wrapping he saw the words Vexilar and he sprang to his feet shouting "look Dad, I now have a Vexilar just like you, we do not have to share anymore".  I am not sure what was more entertaining:
1.  Watching my Brother's face reflecting "I do not think so"
2.  Watching my Mom and Dad's face saying "this kid can read that well already"
3.  Or me being proud that not only did my Son read and know what this was without seeing the picture but he also knew what a valuable fishing tool this was!
Wish I would have caught it on video....could have sent it to Vex!!

My Son was still very excited for the new fishing pole and the tackle/tackle box but the moment was one to cherish....

Now I just need to figure out how to save the cash to buy my Son his own Vex for his 6th Birthday  :o

Don't you just love kids.  I took my 3 year old fishing in a river last fall when the salmon were running.  I had my rod he had his snoopy one.  I cast in the trees and said "Gosh Darnit"  after that every cast he had to say the same.

He loved watching the salmon "fight" as he put it as they were swimming up and down the stream.  Finally I hooked into a 36" 25 pound salmon and after about 15 minutes got it landed.  My son was preoccuppied cause by now he did have his line tangled in the tree.  I told him to look at this fish.  He turned his head and saw a fish as big as he was,  dropped his pole and ran back in the woods and yelled, "DADDY GET AWAY!! THE SHARK IS GONNA EAT YOU!"

No matter what I did he would not come back to the water til that fish was gone so upon his 500th request to let it go I did.  That was probably one of my most fond memories of being dad.

My work keeps me out of michigan and away from my family for extended periods of time but I talk to my family daily.   Told my son I have to get him a new fishing pole because we are going ice fishing in a month.  Now he has to tell everybody that daddy is getting him a new fishing pole and going ice fishing when he gets back.

Can't wait 30 more days til I get the hit the ice with my 3 1/2 year old best friend.
